"William Douglas, who had grant of the lands of Garnestock (sic) in theMoss of Cree from Archibald, Lord DOUGLAS, about 1400. The same sourcefurther alleges that a complete pedigree of the (Douglas) family wastaken to America by the Rev. William Douglas who apparently was SirWilliam's uncle. If it ever existed, this pedigree would be of interest. But in the absence of such evidence, the pedigree chart given here mustcommence with Sir William's grandfather, the first forbear of whoanything is definitely known. This William Douglas married GrizzellM'Keand, who probably belonged to a family of that name who for long weretenants in 'Balsalloch', 'Pilwhilly' and 'Aikerside.' William Douglas andGrizze M'Keand had seven children. The eldest, John, continued the familytenacy in 'Balsalloch' and was the father of Sir William. The second son,James Douglas in 'Kilsture', whose testament was recorded in 1762, left awidow, Mary Martin, who survived him till about 1791, when her testamentwas recorded =: two sons --William Douglas in Petersburgh, U.S.A., andJames Douglas in Norfolk Virginia....Much of the evidence for thispedigree is derived from a letter, dated 6th March, 1831, from Mrs. SusanB. Terrell to Harriet Douglas, third daughter of George Douglas of NewYork, the brother of Sir William Douglas."
