~  Federal Referendum Electoral Roll 1899 ~
The first fiche in this set includes a copy of the very elegant certificate that was presented to each man who voted (a nice extra to add to your Family History Album).

~  Given Names  ~

(1) It has been known for people (of Roman Catholic faith) to be baptised with one name and to use their confirmation name for every day use.

(2) It was quite often common practice, in earlier times, that when men signed up for the services, they were encouraged to have a second name, even if not registered with one.  This was probably one way of identifying many "John Smiths".
