Wells, Beloved Pioneer, Died Thursday Eve. Dr. Andronicus Junia Wells, pioneer physican of Calera, passed away Thursday, July 25th at 6:50 p.m. He died of a cerebral hemorrhage. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:30 p. m. at the Church of Christ in Calera, followed by Masonic services at the Highland Cemetary in Durant. The body will lie in state at the Holmes Funeral Home until time of the funeral. Arrangements are in charge of Holmes. Pall bearers will be Andrew Hamilton, Ralph Johnson, Herb Odell, Cecil McGehee, Arthur McVeigh and Gus Goza. Members of the Calera Masonic Lodge and the Medical Association of Bryan County will be Honorary pall bearers. Dr. Wells, the son of a Baptist minister, Rev. Jonathan Brickey Wells and Mrs. Patience Pendleton Wells, was born in Farmersville, Texas March 24, 1875. He began his education in the Kemp schools under Professor R. Hansell, when Oklahoma was still Indian Territory. His medical studies began in 1895 at Barnes Medical College of St. Louis, Missouri, from which he graduated in 1902. Dr. Wells began his medical practice almost 50 years ago at Utica. In 1907 he moved to Calera where he bought the Sterrett Drug Company, and remained owner and manager of the business until February of this year. On February 26, 1899, the young Doctor was married to Miss Ora Ince of Kemp. To this union were born three Children, Blanche, Clayton and Edith. On January 14, 1940, this family tie was broken by the death of Mrs. Wells. Dr. Wells was widely known and greatly loved by many people throughout Bryan County and southeastern Oklahoma. He was honored by many high positions being President of Bryan County Medical Association for two years, President of the Southeastern District Association for one year, City Treasurer for fifteen years, a member of the Council of Woodman of the World for thirty years, Worshipful Master of the Calera Masonic Lodge for two years, a member of the Democratic Central Committee for years and was awarded the Selective Service Medal for his civilian services in both world wars. On October 15, 1943, Dr. Wells was married to Miss Anna Ausley, of Calera. Survived by his wife, Mrs Anna Wells, two daughters Blanche McFarland and Mrs. Edith Sandquist both of Rosemead, Calif, one son H. C. Wells, San Bernardino, Calif, four grandchildren Janet Sandquist, Metta Carol Wells, Howard Clayton Wells and Occonna Wells; six sisters and one brother, Mrs. Lizzie McCaleb, and Mrs. Kate Gilder both of Dallas, Texas; Mrs Jennie Combs, Wichita Falls, Texas; Mrs. Ella James, Paducah, Texas; Mrs. Myrtle Goza, Calera; Mrs. Nettie Williams, Farmersville, Texas; and Taz Wells, Durant. The following is from notes by Blanche Wells, the first child of A. J. Wells Rev. Jonathan and Patience Wells were the parents of my father in Farmersville, Texas March 24, 1875. His mother named him from the Bible, Romans 16-7. She said that the name Andronicus Junia Wells would look pretty on a diploma. The family called him ''June''. He received the Diploma from The Barnes Medical College in St. Louis, Mo. written beautiful ''Andronica Junior Wells'' on a sheep skin Diploma, April 16, 1902. The only one in the Wells family of 3 boys and 6 girls to get a diploma. He earned money during the summers digging stumps and leveling land. He lived with his brother-in-law who was a Doctor. After graduation, he owned a drug store in a small town ''Utica'' , Indian Territory. In 1907 He moved to Calera, Oklahoma where he remained the remainder of his life. He always owned a drug store. The roads were very poor in the early 1900's. He had a team of horses to drive out in the country, where he delivered many babies. He would stay until the babies were born. My mother would ask, did you get paid? He would sometimes get a ham or something, but not very often. He always read the medical gernals and kept up with medicines. His got his first car in 1916. The roads were little better. He would drive as far as he could. The farmers would meet him and take him the rest of the way. There were few Doctors and he went many miles to deliver babies. He said about three thousand. He had ledgers where he charged everything. He never sent out a bill for collection. Most everyone would pay when they were able. He educated three chilldren who were teachers. We never wanted for anything. He was one of the most wonderfu. Fathers. He was known as ''Doc'' for miles around. Wells dies here Sunday Mrs. A. J. Wells, aged 59 years, Calera, one of Bryan county's best known women, died at a local hospital Sunday afternoon at 2:15 o'clock following an illness of one week. She was the wife of Dr. A. J. Wells, well known Calera pioneer physician. Ora Serepta Ince was born near Rio Vista, Texas, July 4, 1880, and came to Indian Territory when a young girl. She married Dr. Wells at Kemp in 1899. They had made their home in Calera for 33 years. She was a life-long and active member of the Church of Christ, loved her homelife and had lived a life of service and charity toward others. She was artistic in her talents and drew the plans for the new home she and her husband built in Calera about three months ago. She is survived by her husband, two daughters, Mrs. Blanche McFarland and Mrs. Edith Sandquist, Rosemead, Calif., one son, H. C. Wells of Calera, eight sisters and two brothers. Two of the sisters, Mrs. Oma Corse, Lancaster, Calif., and Mrs. Bertha Myers, Houston, Texas, are to be here for the funeral. Mrs. McFarland came by plane from California arriving a few hours before her mother's passing. Mrs. Sandquist was enroute here today by train. Funeral services will be held at the Chuch of Christ there Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock by Rev. Delmar Owens, Ada, and Rev. J. W. Pigg, Madill. As for my self, four years ago I retired after professoring sociology at the University of Toronto 27 years. I have been divorced since my son Jonathan was a baby, and he is now 40, living in Toronto too. I'm still writing and publishing, and I edit a magazine on peace. Almost three months ago my left hip was replace, but I'm mending quite well and went down to the pool tonight to exercise in the water with a woman friend. Jonathan Brickey Wells' death certificate shows his death as November 26, 1926. In the newspaper the McKinney Democrat an obituary ran on December 2, 1926, Page 12, telling of the death of Jonathan Brickey Wells. The heading was as follows: (Note, typed with the same errors that appeared in the paper) 66-year-old Farmersville Resident Dies. (It should have said 66 year resident, because he was 89 years old) Farmersville, Nov 27 J. B. Wells 89 year old. Known as most of the old settlers in this community as Uncle Bricky, died thursday at his home. He came to Farmersville in July, 1860, and this has been his home since. Besides his wife, he is survived by eight children, Mrs. Lizzie McCaleb and Kate Gilder of Dallas, Ella James, Vernon, Mrs. J.E. Williams of Farmersville, Mrs Myrtle Coza (Goza) and Dr. A. J. Wells of Calera, Okla, Mrs Jennie Combs, Walters, Okla and 45 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at the residence Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock by the Rev. G. O. Key of McKinney, with burial in the Odd Fellows cemetery. (A.J. Wells was my Grandfather HCW Jr.) ____________ A record of application for Soldier's Pension shows the name of the applicant as J B Wells of Collin County, Post Office, Farmersville, Texas. The application was filed on August 30, 1913 and approved June 1, 1914. The pension allowed from September 1, 1914. Written on the cover was that he died 12-1-26. In his application he certified: I enlisted and served in the military service of the Confederate States during the war beween the States of the United States . That I was honorably discharged at Houston, Texas on the 23 day of May 1865. He stated his age as 76 years old. That he was born in Lee County Virginis, That he has been a resident of Texas since 1860, living in Collin County. That he had lived in Farmersville for 53 years. A certificate was attached from the County Assessor showing the value of a homestead of $350 and other property real or personal or both of $870. A document shows him serving in the army. 16 Cav.
