  William Wells, son of John and Susannah McBride Wells, was born in a little house that stood where the village of Carlisle is now located in Noble county, Ohio, on January 31, 1827, and departed this life at the home of his youngest son, Martin Wells, at Akron, Ohio on Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, aged eighty-seven years, five months, and fifteen days.
  
  He was united in marriage to Miss Pevnine Hynemon, who lived on elk Fork, December 9, 1849, at the home of Esquire Murrey. To his union were born fourteen children, Mrs. Sarah Hartley and Mrs. Kate Davis, two daughters who grew to womanhood, preceded him to the World Beyond a few years ago, as did seven sons and daughters who died in youth.
  
  Six children remain, J. E. Wells of West Virginia, Walter and Martin Wells, of Akron, Ohio and Mrs. Mae Dyer of Dexter City and Mrs. Caroline Leasure, of near Mt. Tabor. Also twenty-five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, together with many friends who are left to mourn the loss of this old pioneer, for surely the promise has been verified as with the Psalmist in the words, "With long life will I satisfy him."
  
  In the early days he was noted for his strength in manual labor. When timer was plenty and scarcely a stick amiss he could split more rails and work up more timber in one day than many of his fellow workers and when harvest time came on it was few, if any, who could swing the wheat cradle and lay the grain in better shape than Uncle "Billy" Wells, and farmers who wanted a beg day's work done didn't look any further for they knew they would get value received; and in his old days it was interesting to him relate incidents of his boyhood days. He was always ready to lend a helping hand in time of sickness, and if there was a choice apple of nice bit of fruit of any kink, the sick room was always remembered by him.
  
  He seemed to have been, as it were, unconcerned as to his future destiny until the 25th day of September, 1886, when divine providence entered the home and claimed as its victim the wife and mother, leaving him companion less. Then it was, the following winter, he sought and found Jesus, having the witness within of Christ's power on earth to forgive his sins. He united with the Free Methodist church in West Virginia, that being his home at that time. Later on he moved back to Ohio and settled down in Noble county, his children finding homes of their own and leaving him lonely. About twenty years ago he was again united in marriage to Miss Angeline Steed, of near Flag, Ohio, departed this life some eighteen months age. His home being broken up again, he made his home with his daughter Mrs. Caroline Leisure, for a while. Something less than a year ago he went to Dexter City to make his home with his daughter, Mrs. Mae Dyer.
  
  The 11th of April he started for Akron to visit his sons at that place. On leaving he said his daughter, "Well, Mae if I never get back and never see you again be good and let's meet in Heaven". He was then very feeble and he just seemed to get weaker but not to complain of anything in particular, the doctor giving the cause of his death as heart failure. he had a perfect knowledge that he was near life's journey's end, often telling his children that he was ready to go any time; that all he had to do was to just keep ready and he knew the grace of God would keep him for he had a home over there and he was going to possess it. For a few days prior to this death he was unable to talk scarcely any; but he just grew weaker and like a child falling asleep, with a struggle or a murmur, passed out of this world into the Great Beyond where there will be no more good-byes and where separation is a stranger.
  
  The funeral took place at the Mt. Tabor M.E. Church, Sunday morning at 10:00 o'clock, the discourse being delivered by Rev. Sudduth, pastor of the Bern charge, from these words; "And we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, having taken us away." The congregation sang his favorite sons, "Jesus Lover of my Sous", "Asleep in Jesus" and "In the Sweet Bye and Bye". He was laid at roast in an elegant casket overlaid with many beautiful flowers, the pall bearers being sons and grandsons, who tenderly bore the body to its last resting place in Mt. Tabor cemetery, following by a large concourse of sympathetic neighbors and friends.
  
  May we all consider for a moment at least, that this is simply another warning for us to get ready and keep ready to answer the great roll call when it comes our time to go, and without doubt the summons will come to our door before we reach the age of this old father. May we all prepare to meet our God in peace is the wish of this writer.
