THOMAS GOODWIN WELLS, many years a well known
physician of Hopkinton, was born in Lebanon, November
17, 1779, being a son of Thomas Goodwin Wells and Elizabeth
Goodwin. The elder Wells was a farmer and weaver,
like a number of his neighbors who came from Connecticut.
When a young man, the subject of this sketch quitted
the farm and read medicine with Dr. Phineas Parkhurat, of
Lebanon, and subsequently attended medical and surgical
lectures at Hanover. His first practice was in Sutton. In
1807, he came to Hopkinton, locating on the place now
occupied by Dea. David Tucker, in the west part of the
town. Subsequently he moved to Bosoawen, where he
practised for a time, and then he returned and lived in
various places in West Hopkinton, one of them being the
Lazaro Currier spot, where he built the present house.
Afterwards he spent a number of years in Contoocook, and
finally moved to Hopkinton village, occupying the house
that stood many years on the site of the present summer
cottage of Horace G. Chase. Dr. Wells was considered a
superior surgeon for his time. . He sometimes received students
of medicine into Ms office. One of his professional
pupils was Dr. Moses Long, who practised in Concord,
Goffstown, Enfield, Warner, and Rochester, N. Y. Another
was Dr. Henry Lyman, who practised in Warner. While
residing in Boscawen, Dr. Wells, being an intimate acquaintance
of Daniel Webster, sometimes joined him in
pleasure excursions. One day they went out hunting squirrels
with a man named Clark, who wore a gray suit of
clothes. Clark climbed a tree, and Mr. Webster, mistaking
a portion of his gray clothing for the squirrel, fired,
wounding him. The accident caused Mr. Webster much
distress. His generosity caused him to make Clark a number
of presents ; and although Dr. Wells probably charged
nothing for attending professionally to the wound, the
cause of it gave him a keg of oysters, a rare treat for those
times.
In 1802, Thomas G. Wells married Lucinda Lyman, of
Lebanon, daughter of Elias Lyman and Ruth Griswold.
They had eight children, - Thomas Goodwin, born 1804, in
Sutton ; Lucinda Lyman, born 1806, in Sutton ; Phineas
Parkhurst, 1 808 ; Marcia Emeline, 1810; Edwin Ruthwin,
1814; Ruth Lyman, 1816; Elias Lyman, 1818; Rodwell
Emerson, 1820, - all born in Hopkinton.
Dr. Wells died May 2, 1849 ; Mrs. Wells, April 7, 1860.
EDWIN R. WELLS, the son of Dr. Thomas G. Wells and
Lucinda Lyman, was born in Hopkinton, October ii7,
1814. In early life, he attended Hopkinton academy. He
was many years a merchant, residing in Illinois from 1835
to 1840 ; in Pittsburgh, Pa., from 1840 to 1850 ; in California,
from 1850 to 1851 ; in Walpole, from 1851 to 1859 ;
in Dalton, Ga., from 1864 to 1881. In 1881, he returned
to Hopkinton and pursued farming, building the house now
occupied by Charles J. Conner.
Mr. Wells died March 20, 1882. - Unknown author, unknown short title.

1807, he came to Hopkinton, locating on the place now
occupied by Dea. David Tucker, in the west part of the

various places in West Hopkinton, one of them being the
Lazaro Currier spot, where he built the present house.
Afterwards he spent a number of years in Contoocook, and
finally moved to Hopkinton village, occupying the house
that stood many years on the site of the present summer
cottage of Horace G. Chase. Dr. Wells was considered a
superior surgeon for his time. . He sometimes received students
of medicine into Ms office. One of his professional
pupils was Dr. Moses Long, who practised in Concord,
Goffstown, Enfield, Warner, and Rochester, N. Y. Another
was Dr. Henry Lyman, who practised in Warner. While
residing in Boscawen, Dr. Wells, being an intimate acquaintance
of Daniel Webster, sometimes joined him in
pleasure excursions. One day they went out hunting squirrels
with a man named Clark, who wore a gray suit of
clothes. Clark climbed a tree, and Mr. Webster, mistaking
a portion of his gray clothing for the squirrel, fired,
wounding him. The accident caused Mr. Webster much
distress. His generosity caused him to make Clark a number
of presents ; and although Dr. Wells probably charged
nothing for attending professionally to the wound, the
cause of it gave him a keg of oysters, a rare treat for those
times.

OBITUARY.— Phineas Parkhurst Wells, M.D.
Dr. Wells, a prominent homoeopathic physician, died at his residence in Brooklyn, N. Y., on November 23, 1892, in his eighty-fourth year. From his youth Dr. Wells cherished the idea of devoting himself to medicine, but the opposition of his parents induced him to give up the plan and take up the printer's trade instead. He followed this business for a time, but the old desire overcame him at last, and he began the study of medicine. After some preliminary study he entered the Dartmouth Medical College, where he graduated in 1833. During his college course, feeling the need of an acquaintance with other languages than the English, he gave much
labor to Latin, Greek, and French, becoming especially proficient in the
latter. Besides this, when converted to homoeopathy in 1841, he took
up the study of German and mastered it. Dr. Wells moved to Brooklyn
in 1843, where he speedily built up what was at one time the largest
homoeopathic practice in the city. He took an active part in his earlier
days in the organization of different homoeopathic institutions, and was
always ready with his advice and aid to any of his professional associates.
He was one of the founders of the American Institute of Homoeopathy,
and in 1867-68 delivered a course of lectures at the New York
Homoeopathic Medical College. He was a firm believer in the Hahne-
mannic law, and if some have thought that the value of his writings was
impaired by the dogmatic and bitter tone sometimes employed, all believed in his sincerity and zeal. He left six children. His wife died in

he went to Cincinnati, Ohio. Afterward he located in Providence, Rhode
Island, where he was first interested in homoeopathy through Dr. A. H. Okie.
He studied German in order to understand homoeopathy. About this time he
became acquainted wath Dr. Wesselhoeft, who had recently removed to Boston
from Philadelphia, and who gave him a letter of introduction to Hering. He
visited him, and Hering turned the key of his office door, refusing to see any
more patients that day, and they talked until the next morning at four o'clock.
Wells found the knowledge he sought in the conversation of Hering. In
