  Neva Wells was born September 24, 1905 in Sherrodsville, Ohio to Nettie and George German. She was the middle daughter between Hildred and Winona. After a year of education at Kent Normal College, she was qualified to be an elementary school teacher. In 1924 she moved from Dellroy, Ohio to Youngstown, Ohio where she began her career in the Youngstown City Schools as one of the youngest teachers selected from out of town. During the eleven years she was in Youngstown, her Reading teaching techniques were presented as a model for other teachers. In 1935 she left Youngstown to marry Charles Wells. Neva worked as a substitute teacher in the Canton City Schools for 10 years, then volunteered at Aultman Hospital for several years.
  Neva said it was a good idea to exercise the mind in order to stay sharp! She practiced what she preached by enrolling in a speed-reading course, memorizing passages, poems and lists and reading many books. She collected poems since her childhood, taught them to her students, and developed a slide show presentation around poems. In November she recited one of her favorites, CHRISTOPHER WILLOUGHBY WOBBLE, at a Canton Christian Home program. She sought to strengthen her faith with regular devotions. Bible study and participation in study groups and classes. She advised us all that " politeness is to do or say the kindest thing in the kindest way " and " God does not ask about your ability or inability but your availability. She gave herself to us forever in her notes. She wrote words to say she was thinking of you, to thank you, to congratulate you, to encourage you. Her notes were usually short - like a little hug - and showed us how much a brief written thought can brighten a day.
  Despite several illnesses in her life, she displayed ever-increasing patience, good humor and compassion. Although sad to be parted from her 59 - year companion, Charles, who died in November 1994, she felt certain that he had gone ahead of her to be there for her as he always was. She absolutely believed the lines from a poem that ends " death is only a horizon, and a horizon is nothing but the limit of our earthly sight." We thank her for showing us how to move toward that horizon with grace and peace and courage, and we send her into God's care and to her beloved Charles with all our love.
