- Father*: _ID108 B237 _W010 b. 108
- Reference: W010 ID108
- Birth*: 1767; Rhode Island, USA
- Death*: 29 July 1813; Quebec Prison, Quebec, Canada; Children: Eliphel (Wells) Norton, Nancy (Wells) Johnson, Phillip, Caleb, Warner, Nelson, Eliza (Wells) Roberts.
“Family tradition” has it that Caleb was drafted into the New York State Militia for service in the War of 18 12 at Plainfield, Otsego County, NY in March 1813. He served under Corporal Anthony Smith, also a resident of Pittsfield. The company was commanded by Captain William Pallmer under Colonel Belner who was under General Brown. Caleb and Corporal Smith were taken prisoner on June 6, 1813 at the Battle of Stoney Creek in Canada. They were taken to prison in Quebec. Corporal Smith was exchanged, but Caleb was not and died in a Québec prsion. Military service records have not been located for Caleb.
Description- 5ft. 6in. tall-male- long visage- medium complexion- light hair- blue eyes- he had lost the middle finger on his right hand. He was 45 years of age.
According to James Elliott's book "Strange Fatality", The Battle of Stony Creek, 1813" most of the American prisoners of war were taken from Stoney Creek and transported to Quebec. They were then oonfined on the troop ship Hydra and the aged store ship Malabar near the Village of Beauport in Quebec. He states "Forty five year Rhode Islander Cabel Wells, probably one of Little's Volunteer rifleman, lasted four weeks." (from the time he arrived in Quebec.) He sites his source for this LAC (Library and Archives Canada); C690 roll 3233 114, General Entry Book for American Prisoners of War at Quebec. However, he does not state what happened to the dead. There may be some additional information in the original source.
