  Abram W.Wells commonly known as Col. Wells died in St. Marys hospital Thursday afternoon at 4:25 o'clock following an attack of uremic poisoning. He was ill for the last two years and for the last week was confined to the hospital. For 20 years he had made his home with his son J. T. Wells, 1153 N. Main street and prior to that time lived for years in and around Niantic. He was postmaster at Niantic a long time.
  Mr.Wells was born July 12, 1840 at La Grance, Ky. He enlisted in the Civil war with B. Co, 6th Ky, infantry on Sept 23, 1861 and served until 1864. After being mustered out of the service he returned to his home in Kentucky and in 1865 he moved to Niantic. He was married on March 2, 1865. His wife died about 20 years ago.
  Mr. Wells was a member of Dunham post, G.A.R.
  He leaves his son and one daughter, Mrs.Edgar Parks of Niantic.
  The body was removed to Monson & Wilcox undertaking parlors and will remain there until the time of the funeral which probably will be Saturday morning from the chapel.

• Death*: 16 July 1847; Hampton, Rock Island Co., Illinois, USA; Albert Wells, was formerly a prominent farmer and stock-raiser residing on section 30, Zuma Township, and the owner of nearly 1,000 acres of land, was an early pioneer of this county. He came here in 1830 and participated in the Black Hawk War. His brother, Samuel, was killed by the Indians during an engagement. He finally settled in Zuma Township, locating there as early as 1836. He was a native of the Green Mountain State, having been born there June 15, 1810.
  
  Mr. Wells remained under the parental roof-tree, receiving the advantages afforded by the common schools of his native country, and assisting in the maintenance of the family until he arrived at the age of majority. On becoming his own man he left home, and was engaged in buying and selling cattle. He afterwards kept a trading post at Portage, Columbia Co., Wis. In 1838 he settled down to an active business life, and was chiefly occupied in buying cattle and farms, and speculating on them. He was a stirring, active business man all his life long, and died July 16, 1847, leaving a wife, four daughters and a very large circle of friends to mourn his loss.
  
  Mr. Wells formed a matrimonial alliance with Miss Jane M. McNeal June 14, 1838. She was a native of Detroit, Mich., where she was born Nov. 3, 1824. The issue of their union were four children, all girls: Eliza was born Dec. 24, 1839; Eunice L. Aug. 8, 1841; Antonette M., Nov. 16, 1843; and Louise Dec. 30, 1847. Eliza A. married John E. Babcock, and they have six children, namely: Ralph, John, George, Louise L., Maud and Drury.
  
  Eunice married Frank Merrill, and they had one son, George S. Mr. Merrill died in the army, holding the office of Orderly Sergeant at the date of his death. Mrs. Merrill was again married, her second husband being James Mills, and they have one daughter, Jennie. Antonette M. married George W. Henry, and the issue of their union was four children, three sons and one daughter, namely: George W., Edward, Willie J. and Albert W. Louise J. married Nelson Perry, who died March 24, 1879, and she was again married to John Bryan.

  Albert Wells was in Regiment 3 of the Whiteside Brigade of Captain Winters Company. Black Hawk War The Black Hawk War began soon after the Sauk Indians, led by Black Hawk, faring poorly in Iowa where the government had moved them, recrossed the Mississippi River and moved back to their former cornfields to plant a new crop. As tensions mounted, panicky settlers killed two Indians seeking a parley and bearing a white flag. Black Hawk, enraged, began killing white settlers. Observing the military forces organizing against him, Black Hawk reconsidered his actions and decided to surrender. Yet an undisciplined militia ignored a peace flag and attacked the Sauk. The Indian warriors promptly returned fire. The militia retreated in a panic, many forgetting their firearms. The Sauk collected the weapons and retreated northward along the Rock River into Wisconsin. The Black Hawk War had begun. General Henry Atkinson was in charge of U.S. Army forces, assisted by four thousand militiamen led by Henry Dodge and James Henry. Traveling with small children and elderly members of the tribe, the Sauk and Fox were unable to move as rapidly as the soldiers. In an effort to distract the Americans, Sauk warriors raided frontier farms and villages. On July 21, 1832, soldiers led by Henry Dodge caught up with Black Hawk's band near the Wisconsin River, outside of present-day Sauk City. Although greatly outnumbered, Sauk warriors turned the attack on American troops, allowing the Indian women and children to flee across the Wisconsin River. The next morning, the American troops discovered that the Sauk warriors had vanished, having quietly forded the river in darkness. Dodge subsequently fell back, journeying north to Fort Winnebago (near present-day Portage) to obtain supplies. At Fort Winnebago, Dodge joined forces with Atkinson and set out in pursuit of the Sauk and Fox. Most members of the starving band had fled west, hoping to find sanctuary among tribes beyond the Mississippi River. On August 2, U.S. soldiers attacked the Sauk and Fox as they attempted to ford the Mississippi River, near what is now Victory in Vernon County. Ignoring a truce flag, the troops aboard a river steamboat fired cannons and rifles, killing hundreds, including many children. Many of those who made it across the river were slain by the Eastern Sioux, allies of the Americans in 1832. Only 150 of the one thousand members of Black Hawk's band survived the events of the summer of 1832. Survivors rejoined the Sauk and Fox who had remained in Iowa. Black Hawk surrendered to officials at Fort Crawford, Prairie du Chien. The defeated warrior was imprisoned and sent east to meet with President Andrew Jackson and other government officials. Eventually the U. S. government sent him to live with surviving members of the Sauk and Fox nation. JOSIAH MINOT of Concord, Merrimack County, N.H. Democrat. U.S. District Attorney for New Hampshire, 1847-50; delegate to Democratic National Convention from New Hampshire, 1860 graduated at Dartmouth College in 1837. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1840, and opened an office in Concord. He was appointed, in 1852, judge of the Court of Common Pleas, which he resigned, in 1855, to accept the appointment of commissioner of pensions. Ignoring a truce flag, the troops aboard a river steamboat fired cannons and rifles, killing hundreds, including many children. Many of those who made it across the river were slain by the Eastern Sioux, allies of the Americans in 1832. Only 150 of the one thousand members of Black Hawk's band survived the events of the summer of 1832. Survivors rejoined the Sauk and Fox who had remained in Iowa. Black Hawk surrendered to officials at Fort Crawford, Prairie du Chien. The defeated warrior was imprisoned and sent east to meet with President Andrew Jackson and other government officials. Eventually the U. S. government sent him to live with surviving members of the Sauk and Fox nation. JOSIAH MINOT of Concord, Merrimack County, N.H. Democrat. U.S. District Attorney for New Hampshire, 1847-50; delegate to Democratic National Convention from New Hampshire, 1860 graduated at Dartmouth College in 1837. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1840, and opened an office in Concord. He was appointed, in 1852, judge of the Court of Common Pleas, which he resigned, in 1855, to accept the appointment of commissioner of pensions.
