He was the son of the late Christopher C. and Frances Gerald Wells of Jackson, Mississippi. He is preceded in death by his two brothers, Vernon and Elden Wells. Benton is survived by his loving family which includes his wife of 60 years, Tommie Dell Downing Wells; his daughter, Donna Downing Wells Sax and husband Mark L. Sax; and grandchildren, Michael Wells Sax and Casey Alexandra Sax. He is also survived by nephews, Chris Wells and wife Becky of Colorado Springs, Gerald Wells and wife Ruth of Los Angeles, and niece, Anne Wells of Lexington, VA. Mr. Wells began his career with Delta Airlines in 1941, only to be interrupted by W.W. II from 1942 - 1945 where he fought on the European Front with the famous Washington Field Artillary. He retired after 42 years of service from Delta in the capacity of District Director of Marketing in Houston. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Monday September 2, 2002 at Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive. A Memorial service will be held on Tuesday September 3, 2002 at 11 o'clock in the morning at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 3471 Westheimer, with Dr. James W. Moore and Dr. Mark C. Lewis officiating. A reception will follow the service in the Hines Baker Room. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Luke's United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 22013, Houston, Texas 77227-2013 or The University Area Rotary Foundation, 1648 Colquitt, Houston, Texas 77006.

He was a member of South Main Baptist Church in Pasadena for many years and of First Baptist Church of Dodge since his retirement. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Texas for over fifty years. He served the Dodge-Oakhurst Water Corporation as president and as a member of the Board of Directors for many years, was president of the Dodge Cemetery Association, and was a committeeman for the ASC branch of the USDA in Walker County. Preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Johnnie Sue Boney Wells, Hillery is survived by his wife, Eloise Fowler Calvin Wells, his daughter Linda M. Wells and husband William Kimball, daughter Shirley Sue Wells, granddaughter Emilie Sue Buske, granddaughter Hillery Hugg and husband Gregory Press and their children Asher Wells Press and Milla Press, and his first cousins Jerry Dell Gimarc, Mary Jane Clark, and Harrol McClinton, as well as stepchildren Donnie and Sharri Calvin, Linda Turner and husband Howard Ohnesorge, and Becky and Pat Murphey, and their children and grandchildren, and his brother-in-law Bob Fowler and wife Yvonne.
