He was promoted to Sergeant in 1910, Lieutenant in 1918, Captain in 1926 and in 1935 he became Battalion Chief. In 1928, he was named to the Fire Department Trial Board. He retired on February 1, 1938 [Note: The Washington Post article states 1939]. During his 22 years of service he received citations for rescues in 1919 and 1926 and in 1920 one for . He was awarded the ribbon for bravery when the Knickerbocker Theater collapsed. He was a resident of 626 Ray Drive in Silver Spring, Maryland. He was a member of the Naval Lodge of Masons. He died in the Capitol Theater on Thursday, September 25, 1941 while attending a matinee with his wife. An Emergency Hospital ambulance was summoned and he was pronounced dead at the scene. He was 68 years old and the cause of death was thought to be a heart attack. Survivors included his widow, Mrs. Ada Irene Wells; two daughters: Mrs. Ruth Wells Bradbury of Silver Spring and Mrs. Evelyn Wells Bourbon of Santa Barbara, California and one son, Charles A. Wells Jr. of Silver Spring. Arrangements were by the S.H. Hines Funeral Home at 2910 Fourteenth Street Northwest. Interment was in Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Dr wells was stricken with a coronary at his residence, 1175 The Terrace, and was removed to Washington County Hospital where he died at 8:40 am, aged 54 years.
Born in New Martinsville, W Va, the son of Samuel Robinson Wells and the late Dora (Potts) Wells.
Dr Wells graduated from the University of West Virginia in 1926 and received his medical degree from the University of Maryland in 1928. He served as intern and surgical resident at the Maryland General Hospital in Baltimore from 1928 to 1930.
He came to Hagerstown in 1930 and entered private medical practice. He was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma and the Nu Sigma Nu Medical Fraternity.
Dr Wells was appointed the first Deputy County Medical Examiner for Washington County in 1936, and served as coroner continuously since.
He was a member of Randolph Winslow Surgical Society in Baltimore, American Medical Association, and the Medical Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland. He was on the nominating committee of the Maryland Academy of General Practice: past president of the Washington County Medical Society; and a member of the staff of Washington County Hospital. He served as a member of the Selective Service Board. He was a member of Fountain Head Country Club and the Beaver Creek Country Club.
"Among his colleagues he was one of the most outstanding of the medical profession, and was well liked by his fellow practitioners and was highly regarded and respected for his excellent professional judgment."
Surviving are his wife, Virginia (Hay) Wells; father, Samuel Robinson Wells; sons, Samuel Robert Wells Jr, Baltimore; and Richard Hardwick Wells, Fishburn Military Academy; daughter, Suzanne Hay Wells, student at a school in Washington; brothers, Friend Cox Wells and Frank Ephraim Wells, both of New Martinsville, W Va; sisters, Mrs Daniel Bailey and Mrs Percy Vuho, also of New Martinsville, W Va; and a niece and a nephew.
Services to be held at St John's Episcopal Church on Thursday at 2 pm, the Rev Stephen C Walke officiating. Interment in Rest Haven Cemetery.
