Hazel was born April 27, 1913, at her parents' home southeast of Elwin in Macon County. Hazel was the third child of 11 born to George and Dora Edgecombe Wells.
Hazel, a 1931 Mount Zion High School graduate, started at forward on the girls' basketball team, was a GAA member and active in 4-H. Hazel was a member of the 1930 State 4-H judging team.
Hazel and Lyle first met at a Mount Zion High School basketball game. Hazel was selling GAA candy. Lyle's first visit to see Hazel at the Wells' home on his motorcycle did not get Mr. Wells' approval. Several weeks later, Lyle visited driving a shiny new 1934 Chevy.
Hazel and Lyle C. Ellis were married Feb. 4, 1937, at their first home, the Moore farm north east of Macon. Hazel and Lyle were a strong team, working hard to raise crops, livestock and four children. Lyle and Hazel farmed until Lyle's tragic death in 1970.
Hazel worked away from home for 30 years. Known as a hard worker, she never asked for a handout, just found work. Hazel was a great cook, baking cookies, cakes and pies without equal. Hazel's kitchen trademark were her sugar cookies and "homemade" ice cream. Hazel loved to spend time with her 13 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Hazel's long life span began with driving horses to driving a Dixon.
Hazel resided at their second home on Andrews Road for 60 years and, in her 100th summer, was moved to Evergreen Senior Living, Decatur. Hazel entered Fair Haven's Christian Home, Decatur, last August.
