Caroline Smith

F, #83118, b. 27 March 1880, d. 24 October 1944
  • Birth*: 27 March 1880; Pleasants Co., West Virginia, USA
  • (Bride) Marriage*: 30 November 1918; Pleasants Co., West Virginia, USA; Groom=Barton M A Wells
  • Death: 24 October 1944; Saint Marys, Pleasants Co., West Virginia, USA
  • Death*: 24 October 1944; Spencer, Rowan Co., North Carolina, USA; aka: Caroline Smith Smith Price Wells

Caroline Smith was the Daughter of Albert Jasper Smith and Loretta Matheny. She was born on March 27, 1880 in Pleasants County, West Virginia.

Caroline was married at least three times for which may be accounted.

Her first Husband was Friend Albert Smith, whom Caroline married on June 12, 1892 in Pleasants County, West Virginia. Friend was the biological Son of Charles Smith and Rachel Jane Mead. Friend was adopted, per his marriage record to Caroline, by his Mother's second Husband, James Sparks. James' Mother, Rachel Jane, married James Sparks on August 5, 1874 in Monroe County, Ohio.

Caroline's marriage with Friend produced two children:

    1. Lilly Smith, who was born around March of 1893 in Pleasants County, West Virginia; and,

    2. Addie Smith, who was born around January of 1895 in Pleasants County, West Virginia.

By October 15, 1896, Caroline's marriage to Friend was over. That was the date the Friend married Rosa Thrasher in Pleasants County, West Virginia. Friend died on October 7, 1960 in Saint Mary's Township, Pleasants County, West Virginia.

On January 22, 1899, Caroline gave birth to a Son named Phillip. Phillip's biological is not known as Caroline, in filing a birth record for him with Pleasants County, West Virginia, did not list the biological Father, which, more than likely means the boy was not Friend's.

Caroline married James Price, son of George Price and Belle Watkins, in Washington County, Ohio on January 28, 1907. James was born in East Liverpool Township, Columbiana County, Ohio.

Caroline's third Husband was Barton M. A. Wells, son of Christopher Wells and Martha Ann Barhart. Caroline and Barton were married on November 30, 1918 at Saint Mary's Township, Pleasants County, West Virginia. Barton was born on February 28, 1854 in Pleasants County, West Virginia. He died on Mary 31, 1931 in Pleasants County, West Virginia. He is buried in this cemetery.

Caroline died on October 24, 1944 in in Spencer Township, Roane County, West Virginia at the Spencer State Hospital. She was a resident at the State Hospital at least from May 1, 1944 until her death and was said to have suffered from myocarditis and psychosis. Fortunately, she was laid to rest in this cemetery, on October 26, 1944, instead of a cemetery connected to the State Hospital.
