Howard Alexander was going by the last name of WELLS, so this forced James to take the last name of WELLS instead of his birth name of WALLS. Why Howard changed the spelling from WALLS to WELLS is unknown. The other children of Francis David "Frank" and Eliza Walls did not change their names. Howard and James's descendants all used the name WELLS, with the exception of one son of Howard.

Family lore states that he came to Forest City, Maine and later North Jay, Maine. In North Jay Maine, Howard was an overseer in a stone quarry. Sometime during this period Howard changed the spelling of his last name from WALLS to WELLS. Howard's brother James also came to work at this stone quarry and therefore, James also used the spelling WELLS, which James' descendants continued to use as well.

Howard married Justina Alice Sadler and had four children: Twins Walter Andrew and William Francis, Harold Howard, and Herbert Alexander. Three of the children continued the use of WELLS. Harold Howard, was the exception reverting back to the spelling of WALLS.

Howard and Justina separated due to an infidelity on Howard's part. They eventually divorced and Howard married Luella M. Lounsbury on Dec 14, 1905 in Lewiston, Maine. Howard and Luella had one child, Norman Littlefield Wells born March 19, 1910.

Howard worked as an electrian and lived in Tolland County, Connecticut, and Worcester County, Massachusetts.
