Dr. Henry Lycurgus Wells1

M, #85550, b. 3 December 1878, d. 21 November 1963

  • Birth*: 3 December 1878; Newark, Licking Co., Ohio, USA1
  • (Groom) Marriage*: circa 1900; Bride=Bessie Caldwell Pickens
  • Burial*: 21 November 1963; Northwood Cemetery, Cambridge, Guernsey Co., Ohio, USA; Dr. Henry L. Wells, 84 of 819 Lakeside Dr., prominent physician here many years and whose outstanding work in charitable and civic programs is well know locally, died at 3:25 a.m. Friday at Guernsey Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient since Sunday. He had been in failing health but his condition became serious after suffering a stroke Saturday night at his home. Dr. Wells, whose medical career here began Nov. 12, 1902 was referred to as the dean of Guernsey County physicians. He as regarded as the father of the Rotary Club crippled children's work in Guernsey County, and gave much of his time and talent to it, receiving no re-numeration for is services. Dr. Wells was born in Newark Dec 3, 1878, the son of Dr. Levi and Mary Ann Morrison Wells. He was graduated from Cambridge High School in 1898, worked his way through medical colleges in Cleveland, and interned at City Hospital, Cleveland. In 1905, he returned to Cambridge and began practicing with his father. At one time, Dr. Henry, his father and his brother, Dr. Ross Wells, a dentist, shared office space in the same building. In World War I, Dr. Henry enlisted in the army and was stationed at Camp Dix, N.J. Returning to Cambridge, his practice developed into one of the largest in Guernsey County. In his long career, he delivered some 2500 babies. One of them was delivered in a trailer near where Andrews Motel now stands on U.S. Route 40 West of town. Always interested in the medical care of people, in1921 he built a hospital which he named and dedicated to his father and mother. However, attention to hospital details deprived him of the opportunity to visit the many people who called for him and he sold the Wells Hospital in 1933. In later years, he was very active in the establishment of Guernsey Memorial Hospital. Dr. Henry held the Congressional Medal of Merit, the certificate for which was signed by former President Harry S. Truman. He also received citations for his work as a civilian during World War II from two former presidents, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman. One of the greatest pleasures in the life of Dr. Wells was to see children once thought to be hopelessly crippled, walking and finding careers for themselves in all walks of life. He received many Christmas cards each year from former patients, some of whom he could not recognize because they had married and changed their names. Dr. Wells was active in work with veterans of the area and was greatly interested in their welfare. Richard A. Williams, former VA contact representative, here once referred to Dr. Wells as "A truly blessed and consecrated man." Dr. wells retired from active practice Aug 31, 1962. On Nov. 4, 1908, he was married to the former Bessie Caldwell Pickens at a home wedding at Scotch Ridge. Mrs. Wells is presently a hospital patient, having been ill for a considerable length of time. Dr. Wells was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Cambridge Lodge No 66, F & A.M., the York and Scottish Rite bodies, and Aladdin Temple Shrine at Columbus, and a life member of American Legion Post 84. In addition to his widow, Dr. Wells leaves a son, Dr. Arthur Wells, well known Cincinnati surgeon; a sister, Miss Ada M. Wells of Cambridge; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Mary Ann Wells of Lore City R.D.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A son, Paul L. Wells, four sisters and two brothers are deceased. The body is at the Scott Funeral Home here where friends may call 7-9 p.m. Saturday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday. Rotary Club members will call at the funeral home at 2:30 p.m. will be conducted there at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, and as Masonic rites p.m. Sunday. At noon Monday, Dr. Wells' body will be taken to the First Presbyterian Church where it will lie in state until 1:30 p.m. when services will be conducted by the Rev. Thomas M. Wayman. Burial will be in the Northwood Cemetery.
