His grandfather, Zachariah Wells, was living in Ashe Co, NCat the time of the Revolutionary War, and afterward moved to Lee Co.,VA. His father was Robert Wells who was born in Ashe Co., NC, and whomarried Elizabeth Shepherd, the daughter of James Shepherd whobelonged to an old VA family. Robert Wells removed to Jackson Co., MOin 1826 (he is in 1840 Lee Co, VA Census) was one of the earlysettlers of that part of the state, and died middle 1840's.   My great-grandmother, Lucy Jane Bentley Hyder, was from Big Stone Gap, Virginia, and she wrote the following before her death:
  
  "On the 9th day of April 1865, (the day the surrender was made) during the Civil War my grandfather, David Wells, and my uncle, Hiram Creech, were murdered (shot) by the Raiders of the Ku Klux Klan as they were sometimes called. They first removed his (David Wells’) Sunday vest which he was wearing, and then shot him.
  I do not remember my great grandfather Wells’ name, but my grandfather Wells had a brother James, Jack, Elington, and Brickey, also a sister, Agnes Wells Cooper."
  
  The men may have been murdered by guerillas but not by the KKK. The KKK was not formed until 1867, originally starting in Tennessee that year.^3,2
