William T.Wells, one of the last of the pioneer merchants of this city and one of the oldest and most widely known citizens died yesterday afternoon at 1:45 oclock on his resident on N. Main street. Death was not unexpected. Since his return from Philadelphia, to which he went last Nov.to submit to a surgical operation his condition has not been such as to give encouragement to his family or friends. From the immediate effects of the operation he showed signs of recovery and upon coming home he gave promise of living for some years, but a change rapidly took place and his ailment failed to respond to medical treatment.the operation to which Mr.Wells submitted was for an affection of the bladder but this was complicated by Brights disease. His condition became alarming a week ago, but his family did not lose hope until Monday when it became apparent to them that his wasted vitality and broken constitution were not sufficient to cope with the disease with which he was afflicted. Up to the time of his last illness,Mr.Wells had enjoyed good health, being a man of rugged constitution, well fortifed against the attacks of sickness by his exemplary and temperate living. He went to Philadelphia last Nov. to consult a celebrated specialist, Dr.DeCosta and who advised him that an operation was necessary to insure him a return of health and he determined to submit to it. This operation was performed on the 29th day of Nov. at Jefferson hospital of which he remained an inmate for several months receiving the very best attention that modern science could give. He returned home accompanied by his wife about the first of February, but his illness became alarming only two weeks ago.
Mr. Wells was a native of Coshoeton, Ohio, where he was born on May 31, 1834. His early manhood was spent in Ohio, but in 1856 he saw greater opportunities in Illinois and moved to this vicinity.Soon after his arrival here he took a prospecting trip down the Ohio and Mississippi river in a flatboat and upon returning to Illinois he settled for a time at Springfield and there was employed for a short time by the late Charles Matheny. Decatur had impressed him however, as a town of great possibilities and he returned here in the course of a few years and made his fist business venture. He engaged with the late Franklin Priest in the grist and saw mill business, their mill being located in the vicinity of the tray factory. In 1859 he formed a partnership with George E. Morehouse and they established their store in a building occupying the site of the present handsome structure. This partnership with varying changes have continued for forty years but the two original members of the firm are still interested in business. A few years ago the business which had grown from a modest retail country hardward store to one of the biggest jobbing houses in Central Illinois was incorporated as the Morehouse & Wells company. Mr. Morehouse is the president of the enterprise and Mr. Wells was until the time of his death the vice president. The firm is widely know in this section of the country. The growth of the business made necessary a building for greater dimensions than that in which the firm commended and several years ago the beautifully five story structure was erected. Success has attended the firm from the beginning, due to the far sighted and careful business policy of the members. In the early days of the war, acting upon their good business judgment the firm invested heavily in hardware and with the progress of the war the advance on the goods netted them a large profit, being the first good stroke they made in the business world. Mr. Wells received large returns from a simple little device he invented for the strengthening of shovels. It is seen on all shovels of today being the little "T"to reinforce the shovel at the juncture with the handle. On this invention he collected royalties for many years. Another enterprise which netted him good returns was his investment in the typewriting business. He was one of the pioneer manufactures of these now indispensable machines, having become identified with the Caligraph company at a time when there were but few machines on the market. He was the president of the United States Wire Mat company of this city, of which his son Colonel F.P. Wells is the manager.
Mr.Wells was married to Miss Helen M. Parsons in this city in 1861 and to this couple two children,Colonel F.P. Wells, and Mrs. M. R. Keeley of Dwight, Illinois were born. The first Mrs Wells died on Sept. 28,1892, but the two children survive. On Feb. 2, 1896 Mr. Wells was married to Miss Elizabeth Jack in this city and she survives him.
Outside of business circles Mr. Wells was widely known for his deep religious convictions and his work for the church and Sunday schools of the city. For many years he had been a member of the First Presbyterian church and its welfare and advancement were always his constant thought. For twenty five years he acted as superintendent of the Sunday school, retiring about ten years ago. For many years he was a trustee of the church and in everything that pertained to the upbuilding of the church he was an earnest advocate. Mr.Wells was one of the active promoters in the building of the new church, being a member of the building committee and the treasurer of the building fund. Much of his time was given to the work and in the building many of Mr. Wells own ideas were incorporated. He took the greatest pride in the building of a church that would be a credit to the city and the congregation and to his efforts and advice is largely due the fact that the congregation now having a church of such magnificent proportions. In his business life Mr. Wells was careful and conservative and in his habits precise and methodical. In politics he was a republican but never entered actively into campaigns. He always took an interest in the elections either local, state or national but considered his obligation ended when his ballot had been cast for the man of his choice. During his life he was elected to serve on the board of fire commissioners at the time of it organization and remained in the capacity for two terms. He also served on the library board for a number of years and in each capacity his good counsel, sober judgement and well trained business mind redounded to the benefit of the city.
The funeral will be held at 2 oclock Thursday afternoon from the family residence on N. Main street.
