  He was a farmer all of his life and retired in 1965. Mr. Wells was a member of the Brethren Church at Middleburg.
  
  Surviving are his wife, Sarah Cooper Wells; three daughters, Mrs. Grace Barnhard, Mrs. Gladys Pentz and Mrs. Doris L. Mateer, all of Hagerstown; a son, Russell; a step-son, Preston Mullen of Leesburg, Va.; a sister, Mrs. Bertha Ausherman of Greencastle, Pa.; 28 grandchildren, 46 great-granchildren.
  
  The body was taken to the Rest Haven Funeral Chapel. Arrangements will be announced.

K. of the 5th Pennsylvania Reserves in Lancaster County on May 15, 1861. He was mustered in as a Private on June 21, 1861 at Camp Tennally, and was later promoted Sergeant. He was described as having a florid complexion, brown hair and hazel eyes, and standing 5'6 1/2" tall.
  
  He was wounded at the battle of South Mountain on Sept. 14, 1862 and died at a Frederick, Maryland hospital.
  
  "The regiment steadily ascended the rugged side of the mountain [on 14 September] under a heavy fire of artillery and musketry, and after a severe struggle, lasting five hours, carried the heights with the triumphant division and planted its standard upon the summit. It entered the engagement with three hundred and fifty-seven men. Its loss was one killed and nineteen wounded."
