Mary Jane Wells1

F, #100674, b. 1834, d. 26 April 1869

  • Birth*: 1834; Stamford, Fairfield Co., Connecticut, USA1
  • Death*: 26 April 1869
  • Burial*: 26 April 1869; Sacramento City Cemetery, Sacramento, Sacramento Co., California, USA; Benjamin Norton Bugbey’s first wife, Mary Jane was a native of Connecticut, like her husband. He went to California in 1849 when news of the gold discovery reached Connecticut. She wed him at 16 in 1851 when he returned for her. In 1852 she arrived in California, a bride. Her husband served four years as Sacramento County Sheriff and suppressed the persecution of the Chinese in that county. At the outbreak of the Civil War her husband wished to return east to join his brothers and fight for the Union. Fellow citizens persuaded him his patriotic duty lay in remaining in Sacramento County and upholding the law there, which he did.
Her husband held interests in several enterprises and the couple eventually settled on a farm near Folsom, where her husband achieved success as a vineyardist and vintner. The vineyard and winery are now under the waters of Folsom Lake, but the ruins can sometimes still be seen when drought dries the waters enough for the lake level to fall. Her husband's wines, sparkling wines, and brandies achieved renown and even won prizes in France. The Christmas of the year they did, there was an earthquake in California - which might be a co-incidence. The Champagne Galop (sic) was written in his honor. He also became known as The Raisin King when one of California's periodic droughts shriveled their grape crop. Still the thrifty New Englanders, they boxed up the withered fruit and sold it as raisins - just in time for Stir Up Sunday, when housewives began their Christmas holiday baking.
Her obituary, published in The Weekly Telegraph on 1 May 1869 reported, "Last Monday Mrs. Bugbey was killed while riding to Mormon Island to catch a stage to Folsom. She lost her balance and fell over backward on the horse, her skirt hoops catching on the pommel of the saddle leaving her head hanging down. She had almost succeeded in regaining her seat when a gust of wind blew her shawl against the horse and it started, terrified, and ran. Mrs. Bugbey struck the ground and, still caught by the skirt hoops, was dragged 125 yards, fracturing her skull in two places. Her body was brought to Folsom and buried Tuesday afternoon at the Mason Cemetery. The Bugbey's had been married 18 years, 17 of them in Sacramento County. They had no children. Her brother was Mr. Wells."
Her remains were exhumed and re-interred in Sacramento City Cemetery when Sheriff Bugbey retired, moved to Sacramento, and bought their plot there.
