Mrs. E. M. Conkey of Cheapside Meets a Horrible Death

One of the worst burning accidents in the long list of these casualities in this vicinity occurred Friday morning, causing the death of Mrs. Maria E. Conkey, 60 years of age, at her home on the south side of Deerfield street, the small house just north of the iron bridge of the Boston & Maine railroad. It seems that she started out at about 10:30 Friday morning to burn brush and other rubbish, and in some way her clothing caught fire. She was seen by painters employed on the bridge to be rolling around in the grass enveloped in flames. They rushed to the rescue as also did a bicyclist who was passing. Mr. Syms, of John Wilson & Co's, who was laying carpets at Mr. Stimpson's house nearby saw smoke and thinking the house was on fire also hastily ran to the place. They were the first persons at the scene.

They found Mrs. Conkey, lying head downward on the bank in the rear of her house and her clothing was nearly burned off. ( line unreadable) clothing was put out and with the assistance of Robert Abercrombie, who had arrived on the scene, she was carried (line unreadable) by Mr. Abercrombie. Meanwhile word was sent up town to officer Wilcox and he and Dr. Halbert G. Stetson soon arrived.

It was seen at a glance that her life could not be saved, and all the doctor could do was to relieve her suffering. She was a most terrible site to look upon, being one mass of burns from head to foot. She did not regain consciousness, but seemed to be somewhat relieved from pain and clung to life until 1:30 in the afternoon, when death came to her relief.

Mrs. Conkey was the daughter of H. S. Wells of Montague. It was there that she married Sumner Conkey who ran the Montague hotel. He afterwards conducted business in Westfield and Prescott. She came to Greenfield after the death of her husband, in 1862, and has made a constant residence here. She leaves a son, William W. Conkey of Dorchester, an insurance agent; a daughter, Mrs. Jennie Fagan of Waltham; two sisters, Mrs. E. S. Sheldon of this town who lives nearly across the road from where Mrs. Conkey lived, a brother, H. E. Wells of Foxboro. A son Edward S. Conkey, who was railroad conductor, died about two months ago.

Mrs. Conkey was a communicant of the Unitarian church when she was able to attend, but has not been around much since a shock which she received a few years ago. Her children desired to have her live with them but to no avail, and so she resided alone.

The funeral services were held Saturday at 3 o'clock at her home. The burial was in Green River cemetery.
