    In Thick of Battle
Interesting extracts from a letter just received by Harry Wells from his son, Nelson, whose, preceding letter was written from a rest billot, read as follows:
Well dad, we are at it again and I would lots rather be here than back resting, one feels as though they were helping to finish it sooner. It is quite a novel sensation to hear shells going over one's head and then hear them burst close by. Sometimes we are in front of the batteries. In that case there are Incoming and outgoing shells passing over you at the same time. After one becomes used to it one can tell them apart. Shells bursting and the report of a gun are different also. I remember when I first reached the front, one night we were right close to a camouflaged gun when it was fired. Gee! I was scared stiff! I thought it was a shell bursting. I soon got over it though. The same night they started a barrage, there were guns on all (Continued on Page Eight) San Bernardino Sun, Volume 44, Number 56, 6 November 1918 Page 7
    Rialto Correspondence
(Continued from Page Seven) sides of me. . The noise was something fierce. I would rather be here while the war is on with all its hardships than to be back in the states.
The weather is getting pretty crimpy now. We are pretty well equipped for the winter though. Have a leather vest lined with heavy wool and a pair of fur lined gloves. Later they will issue Mackinaws. I really don't think we will have to work all winter though. I think the war will end by Christmas. Since Bulgaria has quit think the rest will follow suit and the "dove of peace" will
soon be popular again. It is sure a swell afternoon, the sun is shining and it is quite comfortable. Am writing this on a star tobacco box. Just got it from the Y. M. C. A. man. Placed on top of the steering wheel to my car it makes a pretty good writing desk. Have a pretty good Y. M. C. A. man with our attery, is very accommodating. He is a regular guy, too.
