He was born Oct. 9, 1904 in Momence to Merrit and Lorena Wells. He was married to the former Marie Kroll Nov. 24, 1926 in Kankakee. He was a retired fireman from the Kankakee Foundry. Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Esther Tetrault of Milford, Evelyn White of St. Joseph, Mich, Bonnie Martin of Thompson, Ga, and Helen Tolzmann of St. Paul, Minn; grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, five brothers, Ray of Bonfield, Roy and John both of Kankakee, Lawrence of Danville and Lloyd of Essex; and four sisters, Faye Spies and Helen Lippold, both of Kankakee, Fern Van Sle and Grace Lloyd, both of South Bend, Ind. One brother, two sisters and one son are deceased. Visitation will be 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. today at Cotter Funeral Home, Momence. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Salvation Capt. Herbert Dahl officiating. Burial will be in Shrontz Cemetery, Momenc

  VARNUM G. WELLS, b. 1841 in Porter Co., IN. Enlisted 31 July 1862 for a term of three years in Co. F., 86th Illinois Vol. lnf. On 31 Dec. 1862 he was captured at the battle of Stones River, TN, but was paroled back to his unit. By 6 Feb. 1863 he was at Benton Barracks, MO. On 17 Feb. 1863 he was at Murfreesboro, TN, and he contracted "inflammation of the left lung" in camp, June 1863. He did no duty from that time until 24 Nov.1863 when he was examined and declared unfit for duty at General Hospital, Quincy, IL. He was discharged for disability 5 Feb. 1864. He d.1 Sept. 1865 as a result of scar tissue after a bout with pneumonia. He is bur. at Harshberger Cem., Haw Creek Twp., Knox Co., IL. [Civil War Records courtesy of Susan Davisson, Olathe, KS]

  Joe Ray Wells four years old son of Mr. and Mrs.Raymond E. Wells, died at their home, 561 N. College street at 3:30 oclock Sunday morning. He had been sick since last Tuesday with intestinal trouble, which caused his death.
  He was born Aug.29, 1922 at Quincy. Besides his parents he is survived by two sisters, Della Irene and Florence Eunice and his grandparents,Mr. and Mrs.Albert Wells of Griggsville and Mr. and Mrs.Elmer DeLong of Decatur.
  The body was removed to Moran & Sons funeral home and prepared for burial.Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
