- Mother*: Elizabeth Bates b. 1750, d. 4 Oct 1846
- Reference: W011 ID095
- Birth*: 15 April 1774; South Carolina, USA1
- Burial: 11 October 1876; McElvain Cemetery, Du Quoin, Perry Co., Illinois, USA; Martha Wells Williams, sometimes called Patsy, was the daughter of Lewis, a South Carolina militiaman in the American Revolution, and Elizabeth Bates Wells.
Martha married William Williams 21 Oct 1802, probably in Greenville County, South Carolina. William was the son of Fredrick William and Annah Bryant Williams. Note: their is some controversy about his mother's name. His headstone reads "William, son of F. & A. Williams."
Although the precise date is not known, various members of Martha and William's families and neighbors prepared to settle on the western frontier. Tradition has it that, in 1803, Lewis Wells, Thomas Taylor, the three Pyle brothers, Robert McElvain and maybe others came to Illinois to assess the land and the Indian situation. They opted to settle in Kentucky instead, because of Indian hostility in Illinois.
Martha and William's two eldest children were born in South Carolina, Susan Elizabeth in 1804 and Thomas Simpson (almost always referred to as Simpson) in 1806. Martha and William's third child, Frederick, was born in Christian County, Kentucky in early 1808, so they apparently moved to Kentucky about 1807. William and Martha were the parents of 11 children who lived to adulthood: Elizabeth Susan, aka Susan Elizabeth, Simpson, Frederick, Ann, Samuel, Richard Wesley, William B., Mary, Abner Joseph, Daniel Lewis, and John Hampton.
By about 1812, various members of the Carolina families apparently began to move into southern Illinois. In 1817, Martha's parents sold their land in Christian County, Kentucky, 514 acres on Blue Lick Fork of Little River. Martha and William remained in Christian County until at least 1830.
In about 1832, Martha and William apparently separated, and Martha and ten of her children moved to southern Illinois, with only the eldest, Elizabeth Susan, wife of John Thompson Brasher (also spelled Brashear or Brazier), remaining in Kentucky. William remained in Kentucky until his death in 1860. The various members of the Williams family acquired several acres of land in Illinois, including land granted to William in 1810 by a United States patent. We have found no record of a divorce, but, William and Martha apparently remained separated for the rest of their lives.
The following obituary from the Du Quoin Tribune, Oct. 12, 1876. Page 1, column 2, cites a slightly incorrect age based on tombstone information and her age as cited in the U.S. Censuses of 1850 & 1860. Martha was probably 90 at the time of her death.
"Martha Wells
Martha Wells, daughter of Lewis Wells & Elizabeth Bates. Wife of William Williams. --Mrs. Martha Williams, aged 91, mother of Abner J., William and Fred Williams, died quite sudden1y last evening, at her home in this Co.. Mrs. W. was one of the early settlers of this Co. and had reached a ripe old age. In the evening when she retired, she appeared in her usual health, but during the night the family were awakened by a noise in her room, and upon going to her bedside found that she was dying. She had suffered some of late with rheumatism, and it is thought that the disease reached the heart, which caused almost sudden death."
Martha is buried here in McElvain Cemetery, near her parents.
