  The past week Mabton has been called upon to mourn the sudden passing away of
  two of its most highly respected pioneer settlers- Wallace WELLS & his sister,
  Mrs. George H. BREWER. On Sept.4 Wallace Wells, while attempting to cross the
  tracks in his auto, was struck by the Northern Pacific west bound train No. 2
  & was instantly killed. Mrs. Brewer did not recover from the effects of the
  shock of the sad news, & passed away at her home in Mabton Wednesday, Sept. 8,
  1920. This brother & sister were born in Wellsville, Allegany Co., N. Y. on
  February 19, 1854 & October 1, 1851, respectively. They were the youngest
  children of a family of ten, six boys & four girls- George, Homer, Romanzo,
  Wallace, Leroy, John, Lucetta, Orpha Semantha, Mary, & Alice Margaret. Romanzo
  of Mabton & Homer of Akron, Ohio are the only survivors of the family..
  At an early age they were left orphans. As their older brother, Romanzo, with
  whom they later made their home, was at the time at the front as a soldier in
  the Civil War with the boys in blue, they were forced to live alone during the
  remainder of the war. In the fall of 1865 Alice Margaret & Wallace, together
  with Romanzo, moved to Roaring Creek, Wi. & at the age of 16 Alice Margaret
  became one of Jackson County's (Wis.) successful teachers. On April 9, 1874,
  Alice M. Wells was united in marriage to George H. Brewer of Roaring Creek,
  Jackson Co., Wi. To this union were born three children, Clarence H., Mrs.
  Elsie A. Varnum, & Edward B. all of Mabton. Mrs. Brewer is also survived by
  her husband. On June 7, 1877 Wallace Wells & Miss Adella Smith were united
  in marriage at Bangor Mills, Chippewa Co., Wi. Four children were born to this
  union. Mrs. Clara Meeks of Mabton, Emerson Wells, who passed away at the age
  of 7, Walter Wells of Baker, Oregon & a baby who died in infancy. On February
  19, 1895, he & his family moved to Mabton, Wash. & lived on a farm in Belma
  until a year ago, when they moved to Mabon. Mrs. Wells also survives. Funeral
  services were held at the Mabton M. E. church over the remains of Mr. Wells &
  interment was made in the Mabton cemetery Sept.6, 1920. Mrs. Alice Brewer with
  her family moved to Mabton in 1906, where she has resided ever since. Funeral
  services were held at the Presbyterian church & the remains laid to rest near
  her brother September 10, 1920. These two sterling people will be greatly
  missed by the community in general & their numerous relatives in particular.
  During the trying times of the late war their enthusiasm & inspiration
  was felt in the Red Cross & Liberty Loan work as well as in all other branches
  necessary for the good cause. Besides this, their respective churches will
  feel their absence a great loss, for they regarded their church & church works
  as part of their daily life. Mabton Newspaper.
