Hon. Martin Welles1

M, #15684, b. 7 December 1787, d. 18 January 1863
  • Reference: W015 ID049
  • Note: Yale College Biographical Sketches, 1751, pp 78-79

"Martin Welles, the eldest child of General Roger Welles (Yale 1775), of Newington Parish, in Wethersfield, Connecticut was born on Dec 7, 1787 and baptized on January 27, 1788, by the name of his maternal grandfather, Capt Martin Kellogg.

He studied law after graduation with Samuel Cowles of Farmington, and after his admission to the bar opened an office there. In September, 1809, he married Frances (or Fanny), daughter of Reuben S. and Levia (_____) Norton of Farmington.

In 1813 he was admitted to the bar of New York State, and began practice in Newburgh, in Orange County. Thence he removed about 1817 to New York City; but in 1820 failing health compelled his return to Wethersfield, and for some yars he retired from professional life.

He was, however, sent by his fellow-townsmen to the General Assembly as a representative in six sessions (1824-37, 1831-32), and was also elected to the State Senate in 1827, 1828, and 1829. He served as Clerk of the Lower House in 1824-26, and as Speaker in 1831-32, presiding with marked dignity and ability. As one of the senior Senators, he was a Fellow of the Yale Corporation for two years (1828-1830). He was a pronounced Whig in politics.

He was an associate Judge of the Hartford County Court from 1824 to 1830.

While in the Legislature in 1827, the new State Prison was largely through his strenuous efforts, located in Wethersfield, and he planned and superintended the erection of the buildings.

In 1850 he resumed prace in Hartford, with energy and devotion.

He had made large investments in land in Ottaw County, in northern Ohio, where the town Martin was named for him. While attending to business there, he died in Martin, on January 19, 1863, in his 76th year. He was buried in Newington.

His children were four sons, and a daughter who died in infancy. The two elder sons were graduates of Yale in 1830 and 1834, respectively, but both died before him.

A copy of his portrait is given in the History of Wethersfield.

Of unimpeachable integrity, powerful and acute intellect, deep knowledge of the law, fearless independence and forcible diction in asserting the claims of his clients, he was an advocate not easy to encounter. With great dignity of deportment he untied in his family life the tenderest symphaies and warmth of heart."

    Edward Bulkeley
was a ship’s Captain and Master, sailing from New London and the Connecticut
River for ports in the Caribbean. Extant shipping manifests, customs declarations,
etc., show that he mastered the sloop Dolphin, the schooner Oliver, and the Fair
    Trader
at one point or another. He sailed into Nevis, Grenada, and Dominica. Bills
of lading show that he accepted horses in Connecticut for sale on the islands. One
document, dated 29 July 1765, when the Dolphin was under Capt. James Mitchell,
that Alexander Granby accepted a brown mare for sale for under £20. The terms
were that the sale was to be made prior to the sloop’s return from Dominica and
that, should she fetch more, the commission would not increase

Mary's portion of the stone is missing but according to Edward Tillotson's survey of the cemetery in 1899 it read:

"Beneath this stone lies interr'd the belov'd remains of Miss Mary Welles, A person amiable in her manners, kind and benevolent in her disposition, and early lover of her God, and believer in Christ her redeemer. She cheerfully sank into the arms of death Aug 10th 1793. Aged 26 years. My spirit cries I am not dead, my body moulders in the ground, My soul to God in Heaven is fled, sometimes I glide down ethers space And watch and view my weeping friends, back I return to God's embrace, and there my quick excursion ends.

Gravesite Details the other person on this double headstone is Capt Gideon Welles (1755-1795)

    Robbins

Robbins is a very old and numerous surname in England , derived from the personal name, Robin , and identical with Robinson in derivation. There have been many prominent men of this family both in England and America .
    (I) John Robbins , progenitor of this family, lived at Hedingworth, Leicestershire, England , and his ancestors doubtless lived there for generations before him, though the lineage has not been traced. The name was common for many generations in that section. He was a large landowner and a man of substance. He died at Hedingworth , August 12, 1680 , probably about ninety years of age. His wife Hester was buried there August 7, 1697 . Children: John , mentioned below; Nicholas , 167 settled in Duxbury, Massachusetts ; Thomas settled in Duxbury ; Samuel , settled in Salisbury, Massachusetts , where he died in 1665 , leaving a will from which the remainder of the family is identified and the relationship established: Joseph , remained in England .
(II) "Gentleman" John (2), son of John (1) Robbins , was born at Hedingworth, England . He settled at Wethersfield, Connecticut , as early as 1638 . He was a man of means and high social standing, whence the title "gentleman" given to him by historians. He had a grant of land at Wethersfield , October 10, 1638 , and other grants later. He was selectman in 1652 : deputy to the general court in 1653-56-57-59 . He died June 27, 1660 , and his inventory amounted to five hundred and seventy-nine pounds, nineteen shillings, four pence. He married, about the middle of September, 1639 , Mary , daughter or sister of Governor Thomas and Elizabeth Welles . The estate was distributed to the children by order of the court dated June 5, 1662 . Children: Mary , born January 20, 1641-42 , married Elizur Kimberly , schoolmaster; Hannah , April 30, 1643 , married Deacon William Warner ; Comfort, October 12, 1646 , married Theophilus Sherman ; John , April 29, 1649 ; Joshua , mentioned below; Samuel , born and died November, 1659 .

    (III) Captain Joshua , son of "Gentleman" John (2) Robbins , was born at Wethersfield , October 21, 1651-52 , died there December 15, 1738 . He held various offices of trust and honor in the town between 1678 and 1703 , and was a prominent and useful citizen. He married, December 24, 1680 , Elizabeth , daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Butler . His wife died April 24, 1736 , aged about seventy-one. Children, born at Wethersfield : Joshua , born October 21, 1681 , mentioned below: Elizabeth , December 29, 1684 , married Nathaniel Talcott : Hannah , June 10, 1688 , married Joseph Welles ; Mary , January 10, 1692 , married Joseph Treat : Captain Jonathan , December 28, 1694 ; Abigail , June 12, 1697 , married, November 30, 1716 , Silas Belden ; Comford , 1699 , married John Coleman ; Sarah , December 31, 1703 , died December 29, 1710 .
