    45. WEALTHIAN6 WHITING (JOHN5, SAMUEL4, JOHN3, WILLIAM2, JOHN1)91,92 was born 25 Sep 1733 in Stonington, CT, and died 5 Dec 1794 in Canterbury, CT. She married DR. GIDEON WELLES 24 Jun 1757 in Newport, RI, son of GIDEON WELLES and HANNAH CHESTER. He was born 26 May 1735 in Wethersfield, CT, and died 7 Feb 1811 in Canterbury, CT.

    Notes for WEALTHIAN WHITING:
    The oldest daughter of John & Phebe, Wealthian, commonly called Wealthy, was born and baptized in Stonington CT. Wealthian married Dr. Gideon Welles (or Wells) of Canterbury CT, in Newport RI on 24 June 1757. Gideon was the sixth child of Gideon & Hannah (Chester) Wells. Sometime after they were married, Wealthian & Gideon moved to Canterbury CT where apparently they became lifetime residence.

    During their 37 years of marriage, Wealthian and Gideon had 5 children. The Canterbury Cemetery lists three children, Harding, Gideon, and John who are buried next to Wealthian & Gideon. According to the headstones, it is unknown if any of them were married. In all probability, their oldest son, Harding Jones Welles, was named after Wealthian's sisters Mary's late husband, Harding Jones.

    The Mormon Church had two other children listed for Wealthian and Gideon. Wealthian, (or Wealthy) and Polly Tyler. No additional information was found on either daughters. Wealthian (Whiting) Welles died in Dec 1794 at the age of 61, followed seventeen years later by the 75 year old Dr. Welles on Feb. 7, 1811.

    Notes for DR. GIDEON WELLES:
    Gideon5 (Gideon4, Robert3, John2, Thomas1) was the great great grandson of Governor Thomas Welles, one of the first settlers of Hartford. (Goodwin pg 250); Bride=Wealthian Whiting4,1

    "Gideon Welles, the youngest child of Capt Gideon and Hannah (Chester) Welles, of Wethersfield, Connecticut, and a brother of Solomon Welles (Yale 1739), was born in Wethersfield May 26 1735. His father died in 1740 and his mother next married Jonathan Hale, of Glastonbury, Connecticut.

    He studied medicine, and served as assistant surgeon in the campaign of 1758. Later he settled as a physician in Plainfield in Windham County, Connecticut, practicing also in Canterbury, in which town he resided for some of the time. He served as Representative in the General Assembly from Plainfield in October, 1769, and from Assembly from Plainfield in October, 1769, and from Canterbury in October 1784. He died in Plainfield, in February 1811, in his 76th year. He married Wealthy Whiting, younger daughter of Colonel John Whiting (Yale College, 1726), of Plainfield and Windham, by his first wife, Phebe Hallam of Stonington. He had but two children -- a son who died unmarried at the age of twenty-one and a daughter, who married and left descendants."6

  • Death*: 20 August 1856; Liverpool, Onondaga Co., New York, USA
  • Obituary*: after 20 August 1856; Liverpool, Onondaga Co., New York, USA;

    "In Liverpool, Onandaga County, NY, Wednesday, August 20, at the residence of his son, Amos Wells, Esq., formerly of this Village, aged eighty-eight years.

    Mr. Wells was among the first settlers in St. Lawrence county at Ogdenburgh. Possessed a strong muscular frame, and of courageous bearing, his early life was chequered with exciting scenes. He was in Shay's Rebellion [Massachusetts] and taken prisioner. He rendered efficient __mid to his country in the last war with Great Britain, and for a number of years held the post of Light House Keeper at this port under consecutive Democratic administrations. In all the relations of life he was esteemed for his honesty and frankness, and will be remembered with the kindest feelings and most sincere regrets by all who knew him. Let us hope that this old time-honered pilgrim has gone to the home where the wicked cease from troubling and the weary are at rest."
