Gurdon Saltonstall
Born: Haverhill, Massachusetts; March 27, 1666
Died: New London; September 20, 1724
Entry by Bruce P. Stark
Gurdon Saltonstall was a New London minister and the governor of Connecticut from 1707 to 1724. He was graduated from Harvard College in 1684, began preaching in New Landon in the winter of 1687, and was ordained in 1691. Saltonstall became the confidant of the town's leading citizen, Fitz-John Winthrop (1638-1707), and as a friend of Winthrop's was an enemy of the dominant political figure in the county, James Fitch (1649-1727). Upon Winthrop's election as governor in 1698, Saltonstall became the governor's agent, secretary, and political manager. Throughout Winthrop's incumbency, Saltonstall was involved in drafting state papers, adjudicating disputes, and even issuing instructions to the legislature. When Winthrop died in November 1707, Saltonstall seemed to be his logical successor to conservatives who feared Fitch and the disorder he created. Saltonstall was chosen governor at a special session of the General Assembly on December 17, 1707, a decision that was ratified by the freemen the next spring.
Gurdon Saltonstall was the first and only clergyman to hold high office in Connecticut and the first person to attain the governorship who had not gone through the apprenticeship of public service that custom required. His wealth, dignity, patrician ancestry, religious orthodoxy, and, most importantly, his closeness to Winthrop, enabled him to secure the governorship. The new governor quickly persuaded the General Assembly to convene a synod at Saybrook to reform and strengthen ecclesiastical discipline in the colony. The resulting Saybrook Platform of 1708 set the course for Connecticut Congregationalism for years to come. Saltonstall was also interested in the fortunes of the Collegiate School and oversaw its move to New Haven in 1718. The last years of Saltonstall's governorship were plagued by factional disputes over the proper site for the Collegiate School, struggles with supporters of native right over title to lands in eastern Connecticut, disagreements between the Upper and Lower House over judicial appointments, and disputes between the two houses over the method of choosing new magistrates after the death of the old ones. These battles became so fierce that Saltonstall twice threatened to resign his post, but he remained the Connecticut governor until death.
Saltonstall first won renown as a minister and confidant of Fitz-John Winthrop. He succeeded his mentor as governor and played a strong role in the religious, educational, economic, and political evolution of Connecticut in the first quarter of the eighteenth century.

45. WEALTHIAN6 WHITING (JOHN5, SAMUEL4, JOHN3, WILLIAM2, JOHN1)91,92 was born 25 Sep 1733 in Stonington, CT, and died 5 Dec 1794 in Canterbury, CT. She married DR. GIDEON WELLES 24 Jun 1757 in Newport, RI, son of GIDEON WELLES and HANNAH CHESTER. He was born 26 May 1735 in Wethersfield, CT, and died 7 Feb 1811 in Canterbury, CT.
Notes for WEALTHIAN WHITING:
The oldest daughter of John & Phebe, Wealthian, commonly called Wealthy, was born and baptized in Stonington CT. Wealthian married Dr. Gideon Welles (or Wells) of Canterbury CT, in Newport RI on 24 June 1757. Gideon was the sixth child of Gideon & Hannah (Chester) Wells. Sometime after they were married, Wealthian & Gideon moved to Canterbury CT where apparently they became lifetime residence.
During their 37 years of marriage, Wealthian and Gideon had 5 children. The Canterbury Cemetery lists three children, Harding, Gideon, and John who are buried next to Wealthian & Gideon. According to the headstones, it is unknown if any of them were married. In all probability, their oldest son, Harding Jones Welles, was named after Wealthian's sisters Mary's late husband, Harding Jones.
The Mormon Church had two other children listed for Wealthian and Gideon. Wealthian, (or Wealthy) and Polly Tyler. No additional information was found on either daughters. Wealthian (Whiting) Welles died in Dec 1794 at the age of 61, followed seventeen years later by the 75 year old Dr. Welles on Feb. 7, 1811.
Notes for DR. GIDEON WELLES:

He studied for college in part at the Boston Latin School, under Master Samuel Hunt (H.C. 1765), and during one year with Rev. Thomas Prentiss, of Medfield, Mass. (H.C. 1766). On leaving college, he studied law for some time with Hon. Levi Lincoln, of AVorcester, Mass. (H.C. 1772), and afterwards with Hon. Harrison Gray Otis, of Boston (H.C. 1783). In 1803, he went to England, and pursued his professional studies there. In 1804, he joined his classmate, Washington Allston, in Paris. A few months afterwards, they went together to Switzerland, and passed St. Gothard in their carriage, being the first persons who had traversed it. They went to Lombardy, and by Lake Como to Rome, passing through Bologna, where Allston examined the great paintings of the Caracci and other great masters. They next went to Florence. The plague, prevailing in Leghorn, detained them at Rome two months, during which time Allston employed himself in painting. At Rome Mr. Welles staid about two months, and Mr. Allston a year. In 1816, he became a partner with Hon. John Welles (H.C. 1782), who was his cousin, in the auxiliary house in Boston to the bankinghouse of Welles and Co., of Paris. This connection continued twenty-eight years, until the death of Samuel Welles (H.C. 1796), which took place in Paris, 31 August, 1841.
He married, 1 August, 1815, Mehitable Stoddard Sumner, eldest daughter of Gov. Increase Sumner (H.C. 1767) ; by whom he had two daughters, Elizabeth and Georgiana, and one son, Benjamin Samuel. His wife died 31 January, 1826; and he married, for his second wife, Susan Codman, daughter of William Codman, Esq., of New York, by whom he had one daughter, Susan; who married, 14 January, 1856, Russell Sturgis, jun., of Boston.
