  • Note: 3 July 1913; Wells stands proudly on South The portrait statue of Major William Wells stands proudly on South
Confederate Avenue, at the base of Bushman Hill, and faces in the direction which Brig. General Elon Farnsworth’s Charge on July 3 took place. The statue of this Medal of Honor winner was dedicated on this spot on July 3, 1913, the 50th anniversary of this day’s actions. Even though the July 3rd fighting was essentially over late in the day, one “small” act remained to be performed on the Union left. Accompanied by four companies of the 1st Vermont Cavalry under Major Wells, Farnsworth charged five Confederate regiments of General Evander Law’s brigade and artillery. Breaking into the Confederate rear right flank, the troopers took heavy musket and cannon fire in the area of the “D-shaped field,” enclosed by a stone wall on the Slyder Farm. Eventually they had to turn back and lost Farnsworth to mortal wounds, along with 75 of the 225 cavalrymen who followed him. Wells was awarded the Medal of Honor for “most distinguished gallantry” in the futile charge, ordered by the division commander, Brig. Gen. Hugh Judson Kilpatrick. Farnsworth has never been so honored, nor does he have a monument of his own on the field.Born in Waterbury VT on December 14, 1837, Wells enlisted as a private at the war’s start in the 1st Vermont Cavalry, and was soon elected Captain. He eventually rose to Brigadier General of Volunteers in May 1865, and had received more promotions than any other Vermont officer during the war. Captured in the spring of 1863, then exchanged, Wells was promoted to Major. In June of 1864 he was promoted to Colonel. The State appropriated $6000 to erect his portrait statue at Gettysburg to honor him and the men under his command. The sculptor, J. Otto Schweizer, used several of Wells’ actual personal possessions in creating the work. To use as models, Wells’ own uniform, hat, boots, belt, and revolver were loaned to the sculptor. The facial features are taken from war-time photographs of Wells. Upon seeing the finished work, friends of Wells were so pleased with it that an exact copy of the statue was created and erected the following year at Battery Park in Burlington VT. After the war, Wells served as Adjutant General of Vermont, then in 1872 became a collector of Internal Revenue, and from 1886-87 served in the State Senate of Vermont. Wells died in New York City on April 29, 1892. Major General Philip H. Sheridan described Wells as “my ideal of a cavalryman.”

To further honor the troopers of the 1st Vermont who participated in this charge, another $2000 was donated by the Survivors Association to create and place a bronze sculpture plate, depicting the action, on the face of the foundation boulder. Schweizer, contracted to sculpt this also, desired accuracy in the plate as well. Using photographs of the actual participants, he modeled each of the faces visible on them and placed them in movements verified by the survivors. The horses on the plate are known as “Morgans,” the same breed on which the unit was mounted when mustered in in 1861. Wells is shown out in front of the charge, saber raised, while General Farnsworth falls mortally wounded at his side. About 20 of the figures on the plaque are identifiable.

    Tired Old House Lives Again
    by Judith Hunt

Known as Gray Gables, the stately home in obvious disrepair at the northeast corner of Highland Avenue and Center Street was completed in 1888 by Curtis Wells. Through the years the future of this house has been questionable, but currently it is receiving a facelift by the owners.

Curtis Wells and his wife, Francis Colbey, were native Vermonters, so the home was built as any respectable New England house should have been. A full basement with room for the laundry and their Chinese cook, Toy ParkYoung, were incorporated into the structure. The first floor included a winter kitchen with a big wood stove and butlers pantry leading to the dining room with a view of the Cajon Pass from the large picture window. The parlor, library, music room, master bedroom and bath were also on the ground floor. A proper storm door and vestibule came before the front door. Upstairs was a parlor, four bedrooms, a bath, sewing room and a cedar storage room. Access to the roof was possible through a small staircase and trap door, so that a flag could be raised. Originally, ornamental grill work or cresting bordered the roof. The Wells lived in their newly constructed barn, on the property, while the house was built.

Described by Mrs. E.P.R. Crafts in her book, Pioneer Days in the San Bernardino Valley as most influential in shaping the moral and religious character of our city, Curtis Wells arrived in 1887 Redlands to find few proper business establishments. Along with R.B. Lane, R.J. Waters and Arthur Shepard, he built three brick buildings at the intersection of State and Orange Streets. Having already established the Union Bank in March of 1887, it was the first business to open at this impressive location. Illustrated Redlands, published by the Redlands Daily Facts in 1897, proclaims the opening of this bank as practically the beginning of business in Redlands proper. Curtis Wells was the president of this bank, which later became the National Bank of Redlands and eventually part of the Bank of America.

The Wells had one son, Karl C. Wells, who initially was a clerk for Union Bank but later promoted to assistant cashier and then cashier. He was an active member, director and treasurer of the YMCA as well as an amateur photographer and president of the Redlands Camera Club. The large one story house stilling existing directly east of Gray Gables was built for Karl by his father and called the Cottage. It too, has seen a recent renovation. Perhaps the day is coming when once again we will see roses and wisteria covering Gray Gables while the Deodar Cedar, originally brought in a can from San Diego and planted by Curtis Wells, sways gently in the breeze.

  • Note*: circa 1861; 1st Vermont Cavalry, Fort Scott, Virginia, USA; CHARLES WELLS

IN January, 1863, when a boy of eighteen, Charles
Wells left Waterbury, Vermont, to join his brother,
Major William Wells, at the front, and in that same
month joined the First Vermont Cavalry at Fort Scott,
Virginia. He remained with the command some eight
months, and was present with Major W Wells (brother) in the
Gettysburg campaign. In August, 1863, he left the
regiment and returned home. Later he removed to
Wawpun, Wisconsin, where he enlisted as a private in
Company B, Forty-first Wisconsin Infantry, and went
to Memphis, Tennessee, the regiment forming a part
of the Sixteenth Army Corps, Major-General A. J.
Smith commanding. At Memphis he was in action
against the raid of Confederate General Forrest. He
was mustered out with his regiment in September,
    1864.
