    WELLS, ASA--Born at Hatfield, Mass., Dec. 15, 1763. Died at Chautauqua County, N. Y., in 1842. Grave in PORTER Cemetery,on LYONS Road Westfield;. Served as private in Capt. Wells' Company, Col. Samuel Brewer's Reg't, Mass. Militia, for three months; served as private in Capt. Timothy Child's Company and Col. David Leonard's Reg't; served as private in Capt. Amasa Sheldon's Company, Col. Elisha Porter's Reg't; served as Fifer in Capt. Russel's 2nd Co. of Vol., 2nd Hampshire Co., for service against the insurgents of Northampton, 1782. Was the son of Samuel (the 5th) and Lucy Evans Wells, and was descended from Hugh Wells, John Wells, John Marsh, John Webster, William Hyde, and Stephen Post, whose names are on the Founder's Monument in Hartford, Conn., and also from Samuel Chapin, whose statue stands in the Art Institute at Springfield, Mass., so honored because he was instrumental in saving the lives of the inhabitants of that town during an Indian uprising. Asa Wells had two brothers who were also soldiers in the American army during the Revolution, David, a private, and Benjamin, an officer. In early life he married Elizabeth Smith and after her death he married, in 1815, Lydia Allis, daughter of John Allis, who was also a Revolutionary soldier. He emigrated to Westfield, N. Y., in 1830, driving through from New England in a covered wagon and settled at the "Gulf" Volusia. There was quite a large family of children, among them "Dollie" and David. Not any of his children are now living and most of the grand-children of the first wife have passed away; though there were ten grandchildren who were living in 1923, one of them, Mrs. Effie Wells Loucks, came from Minnesota to assist in locating his grave. Patterson Chapter D. A. R. placed a memorial stone at his grave in 1924. His wife, Lydia, is buried by his side.
    above data from Chautauqua Co Rev War info;
    below is a letter disputing it;

    I have been reviewing the Revolutionary Service info that you have listed for ASA Wells, b 1763 d 1842 in Chautaugua. Unfortunately not all of the service quoted is for your Asa Wells. Some is for my 5x great grand father, b 1754 Greenfield MA, d 1841 in Chenango, NY.
    The confusion began I believe in 1922 when the DAR member Julia Stone wrote to the Commissioner requesting info on an Asa Wells so that a DAR gravemarker could be placed. The info provided to her was erroneously for my great grandfather Asa Wells, not the Asa Wells who died in Chautaugua. And the mistake has been perpetuated.
    If you review the pension records you will see that info on regiments of Wells, Brewer, Crocker, Alexander are all for my Asa Wells who died in 1841. It looks like the service for the two Asa Wells have been added together.
    May I ask for accuracy sake you remove those references to Wells and Brewer? I try to be as accurate as possible and hope you feel the same. Thank you.
    Diane

Benjamin Wells1,2

  • Note: 355 Jane Anne Wadhams, daughter of Luman and Lucy (Bostwick) (Prindle) Wadhams, born 12 March, 1804, in Charlotte, Vt.; died 24 February, 1885, in Upper Jay, Essex County, N. Y.; married 23 October, 1826, in Westport, N. Y., Benjamin Wells, son of Elisha and Jerusha (Paine) Wells. He was born 13 May, 1802, in Williamsburg, Mass., and died 23 January, 1889, in Upper Jay, N. Y.
    Benjamin Wells was fourteen years of age when, in 1816, he removed with his parents from Williamsburg, Mass., to Upper Jay, N. Y., where they established their new home on the banks of the Ausable River. His uncle, Reuben Wells, was largely engaged in the fur trade in northern New York. At the death of Reuben Wells his lands in Essex County, N. Y., fell to his brother Elisha, the father of Benjamin, and this led them to make their home in what was then a wilderness country. For a time Benjamin Wells, in association with his brother, carried on the manufacture of bloom iron, but he at length devoted himself to farming. He was a man of the highest character, one of the founders of the Congregational church in Upper Jay and for fifty years one of its deacons. He was a leader in all benevolent and philanthropic movements in his vicinity and was widely known as an honored citizen of his town. He and his noble wife, Jane Wadhams Wells, worked together in all the pioneer undertakings of their lives, and to her, equally with her husband, was due their success in life. They labored hand in hand during sixty years—years of content and fruitful endeavor.
    Children, born in Upper Jay, N. Y.:
    i Chester Wadhams Wells, b. 14 Aug., 1827; d. unm., at the residence of his cousin, Luman Wadham, in San Francisco, Cal., 16 Jan., 1887. In 1852 he went to California by the overland route, ii Luman Elisha Wells, b. 18 Mar., 1829; d. 31 Mar., 1829.
