The 1850 Census of OgleCo., IL indicates he was born in OH, and OH is assumed to be correctsince 1850 is ''closer to the event'' than any other record found todate. The 1860, 1870 and 1880 Census of Ogle Co., IL all indicate hewas born in IL, but the 1880 census indicates father born in OH forall of his children. • Burial*: 7 December 1875; Brooklyn Cemetery, Oregon, Ogle Co., Illinois, USA
  • (Deceased) Death*: 7 December 1875; Marion Twp., Ogle Co., Illinois, USA; It has been handed down in the family that Harriet died in childbirth, having triplets, and this is confirmed by the following report of herdeath that appeared in the Ogle County Reporter (a weekly newspaper): OGLE COUNTY REPORTER (The following account is of the first case of the kind ofhappening in Ogle County which has come under our observation and wepresume the first that has occurred in northern Illinois.) The town of Marion, this county, was the location of a case ofdeath from childbirth. The unfortunate lady was Mrs. Wells, wife ofGeorge Wells, a well-to-do farmer. Tuesday Last Mrs. (nee HarrietNorthrup) Wells gave birth to an infant about half-past nine in themorning, at half-past two P. M. to another, followed by a third about'eleven o'clock in the night. Two of the infants were dead when born, the other however dyingshortly after birth. Mrs Wells herself died half an hour after thethird child was born, her suffering being too great for mortalendurance. Two of the infants were females. The funeral, which took place at the Brooklyn school houseThursday, was largely attended by friends of the family. Mrs Wellsand the three infants were interred in one coffin, two of the babesbeing placed in one of her arms, and one in the other. Deceased appeared to be a young health woman, thirty-three yearsof age. ''Death lies on her like an untimely frost.'' She leaves fivechildren, three girls and two boys, and a husband who feels his lossas only a father with small children can, when the wailing cry for''mother'' falls on him, grief stricken and sorrowful. The funeral discourse was delivered by Rev. G. W. Crofts, of thiscity. It was efficient and effective. From my mother I have a typed transcription of this article, but I donot know the source of the transcription. A handwritten notes on itreads ''December 16, 1875'' identified as date of death, but that dateis most likely the date of publication. The article says that herfuneral ''took place...Thursday''. Assuming 16 December is thepublication date she died 7 December, which agrees with the date onher grave marker, and her funeral was held on 9 December. (ShirleyStroud's group sheet, based on information from Ethel Meligan Hartley, has ''about Dec 13, 1887[sic]'' for Harriet's date of death.)

  • (Deceased) Death*: after 1865; Roy B. Wells wrote, ''Clifford [Wells] told me in 1965 that Peter went west, in a wagon train and was never heard from again. He is supposed to have died enroute, and word came back from another source, that he died some where in the west''. Roy told me 8/02/02 that Clifford E.Wells had said that Peter was headed for California. Clifford thought maybe Peter died in Kansas but had searched in Kansas and did not find anything there. Roy theorizes that Peter may have intended to join relatives in California. These cousins may have been Ambrose and Rosalinda Wells Carner (daughter of Peter's uncle Abraham Wells) who first settled in Sutter Co. CA and later lived in Mendocino Co., CA or Hiram Wells (son of Peter's uncle Abraham Wells) who married Welthy Harding and lived in southern CA near Los Angeles.1,8,2
