• Occupation*: miller and millwright The following is from the biography of Luther Wells (a great grandson of James Wells Jr.) found in the Commemorative Biographical Record of Northeastern Pennsylvania: ''James Wells was born in 1750, on the Delaware river. By trade he wasa millwright, and in the days of the Revolution he owned and operateda mill in what is now Monroe county. With this mill he ground flour which he furnished to the Revolutionary army...Mr Wells remained atthe mill during the war, and was granted four sections of land near the present site of Stroudsburg. At the close of the war he located near the mouth of the Tunkhannock, and still later moved up to what isnow Clifford township following his occupation and supplying the needy pioneers with their meal and flour. About or prior to 1806 he ownedand occupied a farm of one houndred [sic] acres at Elkdale. His firstmill was destroyed by a freshet. His second he erected in 1807, inpartnership with Asahel Norton, near the present [1900] site ofMcAlla's. This, too, was carried away by a freshet, about 1813.Selling his farm, he removed about a mile above Clifford's corners.''Note: This account clearly relies on earlier histories of the region, especially Emily C. Blackman's 1873 History of Susquehanna County which reports that his house in Elkdale had ''...a sloping roof and well-guarded porch''. According to historical records JohanisHardenburgh, a resident of Kingston, N.Y., purchased a large tract ofland known as the Hardenburgh patent. This land and another patentknown as the Minisink patent were what is now most of Orange andSullivan Counties. On December17th, 1743 a precinct was formed calledMamakating. Some say it was called Mamacotten. It included what isnow all of Sullivan County but was still a part of Ulster County....In 1788 Mamakating was reduced to its present size with the formingof Deerpark, Orange County in 1788.'' Since this occurred before 1790the location of the Jesse Wells in 1790 - 1800 is roughly establishedin this region of what is now Sullivan Co., NY which was was formedfrom Ulster Co. in 1809. A History of Sullivan County NY identifies a Jesse Wells, a WilliamWells and a David Wells, as residents of Highland in the Town ofLumberland about 1800. Lumberland was formed from Mamakating in 1798and had a population of 733 in 1800. The Town of Highland was formedfrom Lumberland in 1853, and so the Highland where Jesse Wells livedmay have been located in what is now the Town of Highland.^1,2
