WAS UP-BUILDER OF CITY Held Place in Foremost Ranks of Western Michigan's Business Men- Headed Bank and Manufacturing. A.W. Wells, one of St. Joseph's first citizens died suddenly in the Kellogg sanitarium at Battle Creek Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 22, 1912. News of his demise came as a great shock Wednesday to people of this city only a small number of whom had known that he had been a patient in the hospital and had submitted to a delicate operation for bladder trouble. Mr. Wells accompanied by his wife went to Battle Creek about three weeks ago to take a rest more than anything else. While there he underwent a careful examination by specialists and was advised to go on the operating table for relief from prostatic trouble. Dr. Kellogg who advised the operation and who performed It, stated to Mr. Wells and members of his family that while there was no immediate danger of death, a successful operation would have the effect of prolonging the life of the patient. Operation Pronounced Successful. With the courage and optimism that has characterized his life, Mr. Wells gave his consent and was operated upon Thursday, Oct. 17. From a surgical standpoint the operation was pronounced a complete success. The dangerous condition was relieved and Mr. Wells otherwise in excellent physical condition was rallying rapidly. Dr. Kellogg gave as his opinion that he would soon be able to sit up. Sunday night the patient was attacked with nausea but at that time It was thought that it was an after effect of the anaesthetic and no anxiety was felt because of this symptom. Monday morning, however, Mr. Wells began to sink gradually and in spite of the best medical attention that could be given him, passed away peacefully during Tuesday evening. Members of the family in this city had believed that Mr. Wells was on the road to recovery. The first advices that his condition was dangerous came from Mrs. Wells to her daughter-in-law, Mrs. J. 0. Wells, stating that there was some doubt if her husband would return alive to St. Joseph. A few hQurs later came the telegram announcing his death. Await Return of Son. The affection which caused the death of Mr. Wells was identical with that which proved fatal to Hon. L. 0. Fyfe. J. Ogden Wells, the only son, left this city last Monday far Philadelphia and his arrival in Battle Creek was awaited before arrangements were made for bringing the remains to this city. One of City's Upbuilders. Mr. Wells was one of the upbuilders of St. Joseph and one of the leading business men of western Michigan. His interests extended to every part of the country but he was always loyal to his home city and spent a greater part of the year here living simply in his comfortable home on Lake boulevard. He will be missed probably more than any other, man who could have passed out of the commercial life of St. Joseph at this time. He will ever be remembered for his kindly spirit and the generous interest he tGok in the affairs of all. classes who surrounded him in his business enterprises. Mr. Wells was president of the Cooper, Wells . & Co., of the largest hosiery manufacturing plants in the country, of the Union Banking company of this city, of the Wells-Higman Co. of this city and Traverse City and was a director in fruit package manufacturing companies at Greenfield, and Memphis, Tenn.; Vicksburg, Miss.: Fort Valley, and Macon, Ga.; Crystal Springs, Ala., and Tyler, Tex. In many of these companies he was associated with A. D. Kent of this city and H. C. Ward of Greenfield. Tenn. He' was also an extensive holder of real estate. Was Born in Canada. Abel W. Wells was born in Ontario, Prescott county, Can., Sept. 6, 1840, and was 72 years old at the time of his death. His parents, A. W. and Hannah Wells, were also born in Canada. His father was a merchant and later came to the United States and died in Minnesota. Attending the public schools until he was 18 years old, Mr. Wells then entered the employ of his father. Stories of the opportunities open to young men brought him into Michigan and in 1866 he obtained employment in the sawmills of Muskegon. Later he went to Belle Plaine, Minn., and from there up to the headwaters of the Mississippi. Came to St. Joseph in 1868. In 1868 he visited St. Joseph and was so favorably impressed that he decided to remain here. A short time later he formed a partnership with W. W. Wilcox and H. C. Ward under the title of A. W. Wells & Co. and engaged In the manufacture of berry boxes. This laid the foundation of his success In business. The industry grew by leaps and bounds and Mr..Wells gradually extended his interests until he was in control of a large number of fruit package factories. The St. Joseph company later developed into the Wells-Higman company.. Mr. Wells has always been active In the affairs of this company. Heads Union Bank. The Union Banking company was organized in 1883 and Mr. Wells aided in the enterprise. In March, 1893, he was made president of the institution and in that capacity saw the institution grow to one of the most substantial in the smaller cities of the state. A new era recently opened for the bank when it removed to magnificent quarters in its new building. Brings Knitting Factory to City. Since 1879 Mr. Wells has been identified with the Cooper, Wells & Co., whose products are known the world over. He has been president of the company since 1895. The establishment of the factory in this city was very largely the result of the enterprise of the St. Joseph Improvement and Benefit association of which Mr. Wells was the first president, at the formation of the association in 1877. On the burning of the Wooleu mills In Niles, the company was induced to come to this city. It was later reorganized and Mr. Wells became identified with it in association wkh the Cooper family. Many years ago he purchased the Cooper interest in the factory. Of late years Mr. Wells withdrew from active management of the corporation's affairs turning it over to his son J.. 0. Wells. Mr. Wells for two years served the city of St. Joseph as supervisor and for three years was a member of the board of education. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity. Jan. 28, 1868, he was married to Miss Melvina B. Gates of L'Original, Can. Three children were born to them, Cornelia E., James Ogden and Clara, the two daughters new being Mrs. Jay A. Carver of Detroit, and Mrs. Harrison J. Trask, Grand Rapids. Three brothers, Rufus of Herman, Minn.; Harry of Morris, Minn., and Alpheus of Litchfield, Minn., also survive. Remains Arrive Here. Funeral services for the late A. W. Wells will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 from the family home on Lake boulevard. Rev. C. E. Hoag of the Methodist church will be the officiating clergyman. Burial will take place in the city cemetery. The remains arrived Thursday morning over Michigan Central from Battle Creek and were taken to the undertaking rooms' of Baitinger & Kingsley where they will probably remain until Saturday morning. Mr. and Mrs. J. 0. Wells, Maynard Stuart and Henry Bosch, brother of Mrs. J. 0. Wells, came on the same train. Mr. Wells had hurried to Battle Creek from Philadelphia when he received news of his father's demise and he was met there by his wife and Mr. Bosch. Mr. Stuart left here Wednesday morning to lend his assistance in making arrangements for the transportation of the body to this city. Mrs. A. W. Wells left Battle Creek Wednesday morning just at the same time members of the family were hastening to her side from this city. The result was that no member of the family was here to greet the grief-stricken wife when she arrived. She was accompanied by a nurse. Mr. and Mrs. Jay Carver arrived Thursday from Detroit. The latter is a daughter of the late Mr. Wells. The second daughter, Mrs. Harrison J. Trask is now traveling in Europe with her husband and will be unable to reach here in time for the funeral. Mrs. Trask was reached by cable Tuesday in London. The last rites will be marked with the same simplicity that characterized the life the departed manufacturer and banker. It is the request of the family that no flowers be offered. The Cooper, Wells & Co. factory was closed Thursday morning and machinery will remain silent until next Monday morning as a mark of respect to the upbuilder of the world-wide business. Dr. J. B. Kellogg who performed the operation on Mr. Wells was astounded by the death of his patient. He states that recovery /from the Operation seemed certain up to a few hours before the death of Mr. Wells. The operation has resulted In relieving the abnormal condition of the affected organs and from Thursday, when Mr. Wells went under the knife until Monday, no serious symptom had developed that gaye any alarm to the attending physicians. The immediate cause of death was the formation of gasses in the abdomen which crushed the heart. Senator William Alden Smith Thursday morning before his departure from this city paid a. high tribute to the life and character of Mr. Wells. He said: I have known Mr. Wells since I was a boy living In this section of Michigan and he was one of Nature's noblemen. He lived a pure, clean life. I am profoundly moved by news of his death. From St. Joseph Saturday Herald, Oct 26 1912 SIMPLE TRIBUTE REV. C. E. HOAG TELLS OF INSPIRATION CONTAINED IN ACHIEVEMENTS OF A. W. WELLS. LAST RITES ARE IMPRESSIVE Business Associates and Friends Come From Afar to Pay Final Respects -Business Halts During Funeral. 'I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. These words taken from St. Paul and spoken by Rev. C. E. Hoag at the funeral services for the late A. W. Wells Saturday afternoon was a simple tribute to the life of the man. The last rites particularly Impressive in their simplicity were solemnized at the family home on Lake boulevard and were attended by a large concourse of relatives and friends many coming from far distant states. Business Associates Among People. The pallbearers were men who had been intimate friends and business associates of Mr. Wells. The honorary list included: S. B. Anderson, A. T. Tully, Memphis, Tenn.; W. P. Robins, J. S. Morton, A. T. Hall, Benton Harbor; A. D. Kent, James Forbes, Nelson C. Rice, St. Joseph. The active pallbearers were: C. F. Zapf, Traverse City; A. J. Wallace, G. F. Mulllken, I. W. Allen, John F. Duncan, M. H. Stuart, A. B. Moffatt, W. F. Sesser, St. Joseph. The remains were laid to rest in the city cemetery. As a mark of respect to the memory of a man who was held in loving esteem by his fellow townsmen the business houses generally were closed during the hour of the funeral. A bouquet of chrysanthemums tied with purple veiling and arranged with sprays of greenery, adorned the door of the main entrance to the Union Banking Co. building and the flag at the Cooper, Wells & Co. factory floated at half mast Saturday. Those from out of the city in attendance at the funeral were: James Wells, a nephew, Herman, Minn.; Harry Wells, a brother, Morris, Minn.; C. F. Zapf, H. A. Maynard, Traverse City, Mich.; A. T. Tully, S. B. Anderson, Memphis, Tenn.; Frank H. Morrison, LaPorte, Ind.; H. H. Rhymes, Crystal Springs, Miss.; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bosch, Jr., Mrs. Charles Bosch, Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Orell, Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Adams, C. M. Puhlman, Chicago; Mr. Smith of I. Reifsnyder Sons & Co., Philadelphia; Harry C. Ward, Greenfield, Tenn. Last Words by Rev. Hoag. There are times when the Invisible and the eternal become very real to us, said Rev. Hoag in the last remarks at the bier. A gentleman lonely and homesick In a distant city hears a chime of bells~ Following the music he comes to the Father's house. Entering in he found God. In our busy lives we are as men absorbed in the noises of the street, who never hear the music of the bells of the upper air. But now and again something happens to make us pause and we are made conscious of the eternal truth. Life to a true man or woman is a glorious thing. It is the battlefield on which we all win or lose our souls. The fabric of our destiny Is woven out of the commonplace events of our daily life; the little things as well as the great of joy and sorrow of failure and triumph, make or mar our manhood. He Fought a Good Fight. 'Of the one who Is gone from us we can say with exact truth: 'He fought a good fight; he has finished his course with credit to his maker and himself; he kept the faith.' All about us are Institutions which his mind conceived and which his industry builded; and all over the land are men In important places whose feet he started on the path to success. All good work Is Indestructible- no good deed ever dies. The world is a treasure house in which are memorials of men who are gone; laws and literature and tolls and fabrics. The man who we should honor is not the man who says but the man who does; who turns thoughts into deeds and departing leaves a work that abides. Thrice blessed is such a man. We wear civilization as a garment; but the threads in that garment were woven by hands which are now at rest. We bury their bodies but their work abides. The Life of the Man. If Mr. Wells could have his wish he would have no word of eulogy spoken at this time and I shall sacredly observe the wish. At the same time he would want any word spoken that might inspire a young man to make the best of his opportunities and life. Abel W. Wells was not born to the luxury of an easy life. He had his own way to make-his own hand and feet and mind with which to make It. Very early he realized that if he succeeded, his success would be his own and if he failed he alone would be to blame. He did not wait for treasure ships to come from the land of dreams to the harbor of his opportunities; but he took hold of his opportunities; and pulled out into the tossing sea taking great chances in the bard and stormy voyage. He early trained himself to know men and he seldom failed to estimate a man at his right value. His business judgment was almost unerring. Like General Grant, he could tell which of a dozen plans was best. His keenness of vision made him swift of stroke. There was no vacillation in his makeup and no retreat. Having chosen his course he kept to it. Disliked Display and Ostentation. Mr. Wells was not an emotional man, and a stranger would call him cold. Those who knew him felt that southern warmth of his nature. He was a proud man in the best sense. Proud of his achievements, of his associates, and of his family, but there was not an atom of vanity in his nature. He disliked display and ostentation. His untiring Industry was not merely to make money but for the sake of achievement. To do something worth while was the incentive. My record shows that Mr. Wells united with the church Aug. 2, 1377. For many years he has been president of the board of trustees. His interest In the church was very deep and 1 think I never talked with him for any length of time but he inquired about the details of church affairs. He will be sorely missed. Two weeks ago he walked our streets apparently a well man-his step firm, his eye keen. Today there is a rain of unavailing tears. Is this the end? No. The work of man's hands abide. Is not God's greatest and noblest work man eternal? Yes. 'In my father's house are many mansions.' He would not have much mourning. He knew that death is as natural as birth and that in all the universe we cannot drift beyond God's love and care. From St. Joseph Evening Herald, Saturday. Oct. 26, 1912.1,2
