Caleb Wells1

M, #33943, b. 7 August 1771, d. 5 December 1861

  • Birth*: 7 August 1771; Baltimore Co., Maryland, USA1
  • (Groom) Marriage*: February 1789; now Brooke Co., Ohio Co., West Virginia, USA; Bride=Mary Adams2,1
  • (Groom) Marriage*: 5 June 1834; Morgan Co., Ohio, USA; Information on Caleb Wells At age 11 his family migrated, with him, to the Ohio Valley, (WV) where ''he settled on the hill back of Buffalo Creek'' about 4 miles from the mouth of the creek. In 1795 he inherited land from his father and he enlarged these holdings with purchases of land grants. About 1805 he sold out and moved to Morgan County, Ohio to a place south of McConnelsville near the Devil's Tea Table on the Muskingum River. After the death of Mary in 1832 he moved to a farm east of McConnelsville. Caleb was of the so called ''Big Wells'' line. They were of Welsh decent and so called to distinguish them from our English ancestry, called ''Little Wells''. The later were of average stature but the former averaged over 6 feet tall and 200 pounds in weight. The descendants of the ''Big Wells'' settled in the Ohio Valley from the panhandle to the Kentucky line. In 1845 Draper interviewed Caledb Wells, and left a report in his journal. At this time Caleb lived east of McConnelsville, Ohio on Meigs C'reek. He was the son of Benjamin Wells, and was born in Baltimore County, Maryland, August 6, 1771. Caleb knew Indian fighter Lewis Wetzel personally, and Draper entered the following in his journal: ''Once my informant, Caleb Wells, ran a foot race with Lewis Wetzel at Wellsburg. A hundred yards was measured off. Wetzel was to start with his rifle empty, load it as he ran and fire it off, all of which he accomplished; and beat Wells by three yards. ''Caleb Wells, a powerful man, six feet, four inches and eighth, and weighing over 212 pounds, and afterwards, at 50 years of age, reaching as high as 275 - now (at 74) only 175''. The following appears in a Morgan County History. ''Caleb Wells Sr. of Virginia, died about 1869. He had settled near the Devil's Tea Table (a large stone shaped like a table) as early as 1805. Later Caleb and three sons, William, Benjamin and Amon moved to Meigsville Twp''. [Source: ''The Wells Chronicles'' - Jan.-Mar. 1990, pg. 215] ; Bride=Rebecca A Moore3,1
  • Burial*: 5 December 1861; Emery Cemetery, Morgan Co., Ohio, USA
  • (Deceased) Death*: 5 December 1861; Meigsville Twp., Morgan Co., Ohio, USA; Caleb Wells, son of Benjamin and Temperance, was born 7 Aug 1771. When interviewed by Draper, he was living seven miles south of McConnelsville, Ohio on Miegs Creek. He stated that his father Benjamin brought him in the fall of 1782 to settle on the hill back of Buffalo Creek about four miles above the mouth of the creek. Ramsey's fort was about one and a half miles above the creek... by the nearest route. His brothers, Charles and Absalom had come out four years before and settled nearby. They had a fort built by old George McCullock and called after Charles Wells, Wells' Fort, on the waters of Buffalo, and there "forted" in 1782. When Benjamin arrived he built a stockade.

He told of the Builderbacks on Harmon's Creek, of the scalping of Mrs. Van Buskirk in 1790 on her way to the weavers, of the capture of Richard Tilton, and of George McCoy, and a young man David Pulsey at McCoy's taken prisoner (Margaret wife of Geo. McCoy was killed). Wm. Spencer and his son escaped these same Indians, but the party took captive David Cos (Cousin of Capt. Geo. Cox)., Thomas Swearington, John Fitzpatrick and one Crowlley, who was a school teacher on Buffalo Creek. Caleb joined the indignant group that went in pursuit. HE tells of trying to dissuade Joseph Edgington from shooting a squaw names Hannaw, but failing to do so.

Caleb married in February 1798 [1790] Mary Adams.
