Mr. Wells was a son of Isaac Wells and Ann Gladden Wells and the grandson of John and Bride Wells, who were pioneers to this area, John Wells served in the Revolutionary War. Mr. Wells was buried in the family cemetery in Cleveland Co. NC, where his parents and grandparents are buried. He was married to Lucinda Gladden.

• Note*: 23 September 1879; In the Wells family cemetery on the Dixon School Road, south of the town of Kings Mountain NC, is the grave of Robert H. Wells, the fifth child of Isaac & Ann (Gladden) Wells. His tombstone is inscribed; ''Robert H. Wells, died 23 Sept 1879 aged 69 years , The troubles that afflicted the just in numbers may be, But yet at length out of them all the Lord doth set him free'' This verse can be found in the ''Psalter'' of the A.R.P. Church, reflecting that Robert or the person erecting the tombstone was affiliated with that church. Indeed his wife, Lucinda, was a member of the Bethany A.R.P. Church, which is located near Robert's old homestead. The date of death and age are also recorded in an obituary published in the Yorkville Enquirer, 10-2-1879, and also, in the 1880 Mortality schedule of York Co. SC. The H. in his name remains a mystery; some think it was Hambright, and some say Holloway. The close association of his father, Isaac, with the Hambright family tends to suggest that his name was Hambright. he had cousins named both Robert Hambright and Robert Holloway. They Holloway name creates the suspicion that his grandmother Bitter, was a Holloway. Robert was a farmer and ran a grist mill. Robert settled not far from the old homestead of his grandfather, John Wells, but just south of the North Carolina line, in York Co. SC. So near was he to the state line that he appeared in the 1850 census of Cleveland Co. NC. On 12-7-1844, he purchased for $380, a tract of 280 acres on Clark's Fork. This deed was sworn by J.P. Wells in 1847, but was not recorded until 1872. (York Co. Deeds B;110) Robert probably owned other land above the state line into NC. In 1851 he received a land grant (#117 NC), located in NC and SC by the state of NC for $5 per 100 acres, on Clark's creek. In 1851 he deeded to his wife, Lucinda, for $50, a tract lying on Clark's Fork adjoining his own land and land of A.D. Wells, containing 50 acres. This deed was not recorded until 1885 (Cleveland Co. NC deeds, B;229). On 8-10-1866, R.C. Wells of Clark's District, SC sold for the sum of $100, paid by A.D. Wells of Gaston Co NC, give grant-sell and convey parcel of land situated NC & SC, estimated to contain 56 acres. Witnessed by Joseph Bridges, D.A. Miller, J.P. Bal lack, Linda Wells, recorded in 1872 (Cleveland CO. NC Deeds I;238) In 1872 he conveyed to T.J. Colburn of Suffolk Co. Mass, for $170, 57 acres on Clark's Fork, being land entered by himself in 1851, (NC Grant), on half of which is now deeded to A.D. Wells (Cleveland Co. NC Deeds I;343. This Clark's Creek is a creek that rises on the East side of the mountain on which the Battle of Kings Mountain of the Revolutionary Was was fought, and rounds southward into Bullock's Creek. The land conveyed in these deeds was located hard by the site of the Kings Mountain State Park and part was located on land now included in the park. On 1-27-1851, Robert entered lands located on the waters of Clark's Fork, adjoining lands ''of the speculation and his own''. Land Grant issued 3-17-1851, give this as 150 acres (NC Land Grant #117, Book 155, p 114). This land in this grant was located nest to B.F. Briggs and just above the SC State Line, which was the southern boundary for this grant and just across which Robert H. owned other lands. Son Francis Marion Wells and Father Isaac Wells were the chain bearers for this survey. Robert was included in the 1850 census of Cleveland Co. NC, which may indicated that he once resided on his land that was located partly in NC. SC as follows: Sumter 19, wife Emeline 17 David 25, wife Susannah 25, John 3, Marion 1 Robert 46, wife Lucinda 49 Emily 26 Caroline 23 Albert Sansing 21, wife Mary 21 Edward 15 Elisabeth 9 Margaret 3 Also listed with him is Sarah Hambright, age 75. An Aunt Sarah Hambright, is remembered by many in family lore. She was Sarah Green Hambright, married to John Hambright (son of Col. Frederick Hambright). Lucinda's household is recorded in the 1880 census with some of the children. No probate for the estate of Robert H. Wells has ever been found, which was probably somewhat surprising to his family, as he apparently had told several of his children what portion of his estate they were to inherit & the conditions for their inheritance. Among them being his son Arthur H. Wells. Robert may have intended to make up a will and never got around to it, but it seems that his children thought there was one. A dispute arose soon after Robert's death in which some of the children claimed that Edward Wells had possession of the will and knowingly disposed of it; others claimed that David Z, who had joined the L.D.S. Church and moved to Utah about 1880 and took with him, the bible of Robert H. & Lucinda, which may have contained the controversial will. Evidently no will was ever found. The issue of the disposition of Robert's estate became a hotly debated event, which seemingly alienated Lucina and some of her children for the remainder of their lives, and accumulated in 1885 by Alexander Vesco Wells and Robert Sumpter Wells suing their mother, Lucinda, & the remaining children for a portion of their father's estate, which contained about 300 acres, house, barn, livestock, grain mill and fixtures. Ten surving children and three son-in-laws were named in the complaint. Three children, (David Z., Emily Ann, and Arthur H.) and the three children of deceased daughter, Mrs. Thomas Farris, are indicated as residing ''beyond the limits of this state''. Lucinda, bought the childrens part. (York County SC CCP Judgement Rolls, 1880-present, Box 19, Roll 1390). The bible of Robert & Lucinda that was reported to have been taken to Utah by their son David Z. about 1880, was intact at least until the death of David's daughter Sarah Belle Wells Anderson, in 1959.   Isaac was a blacksmith, hatter and a maker and dyer of horse blankets. He died in the same flu epidemic that took his wife, Ann and is buried in the family cemetery along with his father. Isaac Wells old home, built in the early 1800's still stands, located near the old homestead of his father, two miles NW of the Kings Mtn. State Park which is located just south of the state line in York Co, SC.
