passed by Cape Horn and Salt Lake after
night. Sunday could see Salt Lake -
nice. Got out and took Leora out too.
Leora seen little Indians on top of Mts. I got rock No.1 at Independence (Rock)
between 2 & 3. Monday Oct. 15

.........................Golconda for breakfast.......................

Mts. sa(w) graves, seen Indians - Leora
gave apple. Got to Winneonucca at noon.
Stayed 2 hours there. Were silver mines. Hot springs, Indian huts -seen them
drying meat; chinees girl, hack. Gus took Leora up town -seen hot springs after
Humbolt. Got a fountain and swum
green yard passed Humbolt L. 15 mi
long 8 wide & white desert. Moon was
eclipse, men got drunk, tramps,
bought milk Lovesdale.

Oct 16th

Reno nicest place yet. Got bread & cakes
& milk for breakfast. Seen graveyard
& next nice place at saw mill - See where
they eregate. Nice Pines all over Mts.
Wood by 1000s of cords (at) Boca, Truckee
River Seeneries all way from Reno;
Boca has a brury & lumber mill.
- passed through Truckee; passed Cape
Horn by moonlight Got to Sacramento
between 11 & 12 PM. Stayed till 4
or 5 P.M. Went saw boat & capital.
Went to Lathrope at 9 -stayed till
4 in morning Thursday Oct. 18

From Sacramento, they took the Southern Pacific R&R south to San Bernardino, and then the Sante Fe R&R to Temecula - a Stage Stop and Railroad Station, built something like that below.


This is an 1883 PASSENGER TRAIN, like the one Gus Hindorff & Family took to California. Typical was the Spanish-style train depot with red-tiled roof in 19th century America. The scene of their arrival in Temecula probably looked something like this.

 

R&R crates

Gus & Leanore's things were shipped to California on the train in crates like those above, as he mentioned a small "box" in S.B. in his letter. Apparently they stored some of their things in San Bernardino until the house was complete. (see his letter)
