John G. Webb was born March 5, 1821 in Lincoln County, Tennesse, son of Hiram Webb and Mary Rebecca Blalock. He married on Aug. 8, 1844, in Itawamba County, Mississippi to Priscilla Bowles, who was the daughter of John Bowles and Millie Caroline Pate.  If you follow the path of his parents he just missed the 1820 census in Lincoln County, Tennessee, but his sisters Mary Ann "Polly" Webb and Lucinda Webb are the young daughters listed as being under age 5.  In 1830 in Marion County, Alabama, John would be living with his parents.

In 1838 as you may have previously read his father was tragically killed. So on the 1840 census in Itawamba County, Mississippi, his mother is a widow and John is a young man, being no more than 17 when his father died. In 1850 you can find him listed on the Itawamba County, Mississippi census, age 30, with wife Priscilla 20 and children Caroline 6, Mary 4, and Desdemonia 2, in household 398. His family lived close to his brother, William Jefferson Webb in 399, Hiram in 400 (brother), James E. in 402 (brother) and mother Mary Paschall a little futher on.  In 1860 we cannot locate our John G. Webb on a census in either Mississippi or Alabama which is where he should be according to his children births. The only clue we have other than a missed person by the census is a photo taken of him in Gatesville, Texas, but we are not sure of the time period on the photo. His brothers and sisters and mother are in Marion County, Alabama.

In 1870 he appears on the Sanford County, Alabama census close to his family again. Sanford was formed from what previously was known as Marion County, Alabama, land which would later become Lamar County, Alabama.  In 1880 John is listed in Lamar County, Alabama, but he is listed as John A., the only time anything other than G. appears as a middle inital. I think this is just a typo but have yet to find any middle name, even though it is rumored to be Grimes, Green or Greenberry or Granville by the many relatives researching down the line.  Also on this census an unknown grandaughter lives with them Willie H. who we think is the daughter of his own daughter, Mahala.

In 1900 John and family are back in Itawamba County, Mississipp, having moved there around 1890 which we know from the infamous article on the murder of one son by another which we will talk more about later. There is another unaccounted for grandchild, a Maud A., living with them at this time. John G. Webb died June 28, 1903 in Clay, Itawamba County, Mississippi.  His wife would lives another 12 years (she dies Nov. 29, 1915 in Clay and is buried beside her husband in an unmarked grave in Cloverridge Cemetery in Itawamba County).  She can be found living with the Starks Pollen Roberts family in 1910, her daughter and daughter's family. This is the first census to state how many children she has had which she says is 15 with 9 still living.

One of the more interesting stories about this family is the March 11, 1891 killing near Sulligent, Alabama of two of John's sons. Dumas, child number seven, was killed by his brother Jack in a dispute over their father's land (according to some). John had apparently moved back to Itawamba County in 1890 and left Dumas to care for his place in Alabama. Jack and wife (according to the newspaper article) were stealing and selling John's corn. When confronted by Dumas, Jack pulled a gun and shot Dumas and killed him. Nell and Dannie Camp descendants of Desdemonia Webb who was the sister to Dumas and Jack, remember hearing the family say that each night Desdemonia would make up provisions and food and leave on the kitchen table and each morning they would dissappear and they believe she was caring for her brother Jack who was never heard from again.

Several of the children stayed in Mississippi, including Priscilla Justice who died there quite young, Desdemonia Scott who we are not sure but think she died there as well, Telitha Chamblee who died and is buried in Clover Ridge, Dumas who is buried on the old home place in AL, Polly Blalock who lived in Mornoe Co. Ms and Pine Springs Ms., and Cynthia Roberts who is buried in Clover Ridge.

V. Levi , Sallie and Minnie are unknown but may be in AL.

Fannie Wilson, Julie Burns and Caroline Williams all moved to Texas.

John Frank, Margaret Justice, Jack and Julie Burns all lived at one time or another in Oklahoma many of them dieing there. John Frank died in Monroe, LeFlore , Ok. , His sister Julie lived there until after the war her son contracted a disease from the war which put this family in a Sanitorium in Texas in which Julie both her sons by first marriage and her two daughters by second all came down with this and died. Jack was in Oklahoma in 1880-1890 according to the newspaper article. Margaret Justice lived in LeFlore Co. Okl but moved to Allen, Pontotoc, Ok. to settle a few others came to okla and eventually went back to Ms. Dumas Webbs wife and children moved to LeFlore Co. As well.
