Anthony Irvin and Narcissa Jane Webb Irvin

Narcissa Jane Webb was born in 1835 in then Marion County, Alabama (probably in modern Lamar County, Alabama) to Hiram Webb and Mary Rebecca Blaylock Webb.  She never got much of a chance to know her father since he died when she was around three years old.  Her mother remarried when she was about twelve years old, and it was just a little after that when she was married herself.

On October 29, 1850, in Itawamba County, Mississippi, at the age of either 14 or 15, Narcissa Jane Webb married Anthony Irvin, who was 24 years old at the time.  He was born in Kershaw County, South Carolina, where his family was from, and had moved to Monroe County, Mississippi, right on the border with Alabama, when he was young.

Two years later, the young couple had their first child, William Robert Irvin.  He was followed by Thomas Jefferson Irvin, Francis Ellen Irvin, Polly Anna Irvin, Rufus Morgan Irvin,  and Sydney Alice Irvin, born in January of 1859.  Later that year, Anthony bought some land of his own in Monroe County, Mississippi:

Township 13, Range 16 West, Section 19, SW1/4, Marion Co., AL
(Only the northeast quarter of this quarter section was purchased)
Anthony Irvin purchased 40 acres of land as a Cash Entry Sale at Columbus on October 1, 1859.
This land lies in the Gattman community.  It is just west of the intersection of Old Highway 6 (AKA Sipsey Trail) and the Sipsey-Detroit Road.  It is on the edge of swampy land and the Sipsey Creek runs a little to the west of it.    The next two children they had, a girl named Martha Bell and a boy named Jacob Newman, both died very young.

During the Civil War, Anthony signed up with
Company C, 2nd Battalion (Harris') Miss. State Cavalry.  How much he participated in the war is not known, but he does have a few entries in the records for this company (see entries below).  During the war, they had another son, Benjamin Theophis Irvin, and a daughter, Mary Jane Irvin.

After the war ended, they had more children: John Anthony Irvin, James Moman Irvin, Julia Idella Irvin, Saphronia Leather Irvin, Emma Elizabeth Irvin, and Andrew McWayne Irvin, bringing the total number up to sixteen!

In 1880, the census recorded the family this way:

They were living next to John Anthony Irvin, son, and one from Andrew McWayne Irvin, another son.  Although they were 74 and 63, they still had a lot of life left in them!  But in April of 1918, at the age of 92, Anthony had been out one day cutting wood and brought in some of the small pieces.  He either sat down in his chair after coming in or he just fell over after saying to one of his granddaughters, "catch me, I'm falling."  He was buried in the Blair Cemetery in Monroe County.

Narcissa Jane lived for another twelve years.  She took a lot of pride in being able to take care of herself to a great extent and being able to take her meals unassisted right up until a week or so before she passed away.  When she did die, she was sitting in her chair, waiting for her pipe to be filled.  She died on February 7, 1930, at the advanced age of 95.  She was buried in the Parham Cemetery in Monroe County.  Her obituary is recorded below.
