Telitha Adeline Webb
Telitha Adeline Webb Chamblee

Supposedly a photo of Telitha Adeline Webb ChambleeTelitha Adeline Webb was one of John G. Webb's middle children.  She was born on November 21, 1856 in the Clay community of Itawamba County, Mississippi.  She lived there, with her rather large family, surrounded by Webbs, Williams, Chamblees, Cliftons and other local families, and it is not surprising that she married into one of the closest ones.  A month or so before her 31st birthday, Telitha married a widower, Benjamin Hocutt Chamblee, twelve years her senior.  His family had lived in the Clay community for sometime and his father and mother, John Chamblee and Winnifred Hocutt, were not buried very far away from where the family would live.  His first wife, Ellen Todd, had died within the last decade, and he had at least four daughters and a son by her.  The eldest was seventeen years old when he married Telitha.

We do not have the 1890 census, but in 1900, just a few months after Benjamin had passed away, the census takers recorded the family this way:

Chamblee, Palestine Dau. Aug. 1889 10 MS AL AL
Chamblee, Pearl Dau. Sept. 1890 9 MS AL AL
Chamblee, Jim W. Son Jan. 1894 6 MS AL AL
The Lon Chamblee who was born in March of 1884, was Benjamin's son by his previous marriage.  Their first child together was John W. Chamblee, born in October of 1887.

In 1920, the census recorded Telitha again, still a widow, with two of her children still at home (Jim Wade would always remain with Telitha until her death):

One of her grandchildren has told me that Telitha had a very bad form of skin cancer on her forehead, just above her nose (another Webb descendant in the Clay community had one as well, Telitha's cousin, Sarah Lou Genie Webb Franks).  They just said it was a 'sore' that never would get well and that the doctors didn't know what to do with it.  Telitha passed away at the age of 87, in 1943.  Her obituary survives, but I do not have a copy of it at the present time. Although Benjamin had been buried at the Chamblee Cemetery in the Clay community, Telitha must have chosen to be buried with her parents and some of her siblings at the Clover-Ridge Cemetery, not more than two and a half miles away.  It had been 43 years since her husband had passed away and she probably had little reason to be buried there, with his family, when she had spent the time since then around her own family, who were mostly buried at Clover-Ridge.

I don't know much of anything about Telitha's personality, but any comments on her or her family would be appreciated.
