David's Doctorate

Congratulations!!!!! to my son, David Helvering, for achieving his goal of a Doctor of Philosophy in Music Theory from the University of Iowa! 

I am so proud of you David!


David A. Helvering, BK High graduate, receives degree from University of Iowa

David A. Helvering, a 1990 graduate of Bald Knob High School, recently earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Music Theory from The University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. His dissertation, entitled Functions of Dialogue Underscoring in American Feature Film, provides the first thorough examination of the role music performs when accompanying dialogue in sound film. The dissertation will be available from University Microfilms, Inc. sometime within the coming year.

Dr. Helvering received a Bachelor of Music Education from Arkansas State University in Jonesboro and a Master of Music in Music Theory and Composition from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. He currently teaches classes in music theory and aural skills at Lawrence University, a nationally recognized private liberal arts college located in Appleton, Wisconsin. His wife, the former Emily Griswold of Bryant, Arkansas, holds a Doctor of Musical Arts from The University of Iowa and teaches applied oboe at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. She is also a member of the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra and the Oshkosh Symphony Orchestra and freelances in the Appleton/Green Bay area.

Dr. Helvering is the son of David and Jane Ellis of Bald Knob and David and Martha Helvering of Benton, and the grandson of Leo Watson, and the late Pauline Watson of Pinson, Tennessee and Ethel Helvering and the late James Helvering of Bradford.
