Obituary of R. E. Shackelford

Mr. R. E. Shackelford Passes Away Suddenly, Friday, Sept. 4, 1936

This entire section was shocked and saddened Friday of last week when it was known that Mr. Robert E. Shackelford had died suddenly at Clifton while there on a business trip.

Mr. Shackelford was born in Giles County, Tennessee, in 1879.

After teaching schools for a number of years he studied embalming and went into the undertaking business.  He came to Savannah in 1926 and organized the Shackelford Burial Association, which under his management had grown to large proportions throughout Hardin and adjoining counties, averaging during the past few years more than twenty thousand members.

Mr. Shackelford was recognized as a past master at his vocation.  He was a devout churchman, being one of the leaders in the local Church of Christ.  He was charitable and philanthropic in his dealings with his fellowmen, and this won for him the well known appellation of "A Prince of a Fellow."  He was satisfied with nothing less than the best for the ones he served, for himself and his.

The deceased is survived by his widow, Mrs. Loura Paisley Shackelford, by his son, Paisley Shackelford, by two grandchildren, and two brothers, J. T. Shackelford and W. G. Shackelford of Texas.

The funeral service was held at the Church of Christ, Saturday afternoon at four o'clock, Elder Gaynor of Florence officiating.

We join in extending condolence to his bereaved family.
