BiographyThey lived for some time in Herkimer Co., N.Y. where their first three children were born; then joined the migration to the Northwest Territory where their fourth child, Amanda was born in Winnebago Valley, Minn., in 1858. Two sisters were born there, Louesa ('Edie') in 1861 and Frances in 1863; the family then moved to Jefferson, Minn, where two sons were born, Charles in 1865 and Nathaniel in 1870. The father, Lovell, died, Jefferson, Minn., on May 3, 1874. Sometime ca 1876, Louesa, now a widow, moved from New Albin, Minn, to Caledonia, Dakota Terr, with her three daughters and three sons. This was a new settlement begun there in 1870. Among its early settlers were four young men from Peacham, Caledonia Co., Vt., who helped establish the town and gave it the name, Caledonia, from their native Caledonia Co. in Vt. They were the three Clark brothers, Joseph Prime, Oliver and Chester, and Asa Sargeant. Asa was the manager there of the Hudson Bay Co. including a hotel, "American House". Louesa was put in charge of the hotel. Several years later she travelled West with her three sons to Oregon. She died Salem, Ore., Mar. 25, 1925, age 97, and was buried in the Friends'
Cemetery, Newberg, Ore. We visited her grave there and that of her son, Lovell, in the summer of 1968 and obtained their dates for the first time. Some additional names and dates for Louesa's family were discovered in mid October, 1968, by Francis E. Clark of Salem, Ore., in Louesa's family Bible and were sent on to me to include in her family record. I am delighted to do this.2
