Biography

Keizer: son of Michael and grandson of George and Frederica, who came to Lunenberg, NS from Phaltz, Rhemish Bavaria, Germany, 1753. His two brothers went to PA. Two brothers went to PA; George was killed by Indians at Lunenburg. Had 4 children: Michael, John, Jacob, and Mary. Michael m. Hannah Weiler; had land at Chester; d. 1848 at age 100. Had two children, Peter and Annie.
White: 'Peter, son of Michael and Hannah (Weiler) Keizer and grandson of George, the emigrant, who came from Gerrmany to Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, in 1753...In the History and Genealogy of the Houghton family, we find the following in regard to this family: 'During one of the Indian raids, aided and abetted by the French, (Acadians), one of the German settlers of Lunenburg, George Keizer, lost his life. When the massacres seemed to have ceased, George believed the time propitious to build on his grant in the North-west, some four miles from Lunenburg Town, and on a day when his house was nearly finished, he was suddenly surrounded by the Indians, who had watched his operations, whom he discovered none too soon, and fleeing for his life with the howling devils after him, he reached Lunenburg exhausted, where he died nine days after, but whether from wounds or exhaustion is not known by the writer. Perhaps there are those living who can tell? George had four children, Michael, John, Jacob, and Mary, who married John Scweitheimer son of Philip the original grantee of that name; John and Jacob settled at Rosebay and Kingsbury. Michael was five years old on their arrival at Lunenburg in 1753; he married Hannah Weiler about the year 1770, obtaining a considerable grant of land at West Chester he removed thence where he died in 1848, being about one hundred years old. Michael, following the example of his preecessors became wealthy. The lands once held by him bordering on Chester Bay are now divided into a dozen farms having almost gone out of the family besides land situated on the Windsor road once owned by him, is now held by others. Michael built and owned the first brig ever built at Chester Bay. At one time he owned two brigs and a schooner which he sent annually to Labrador where he owned salmon fishing berths. Being a navigator himself, he often went there as master of one of his vessels. The salmon were so abundant in those days that full cargoes were nearly always obtained and thus swelling his coffer at every trip he soon amassed a fortune, but misfortune soon overtook him. One after the other of his vessels were lost, his roomy house, fine for those days, at West Chester, burnt to the ground and the law-suit with Capt. Jacob Millett, his son-in-law, nearly ruined him, so that when his will was made, only moderate bequests were obtained by his sons and daughters. His children were John and George who died young; Jacob married Lucy Vaughan; Michael married Susan Sawlor; Peter married Annie Vaughn; Henry married Elizabeth Hiltz (Hildz); Sarah married Jacob Millett; Lucy married George Rafuse (Rufus) and Hannah married Peter Hiltz. The name 'Keizer' spelt only once in the original grant 'Keizzer' is more frequently spelt as above, though recently for brevity thus, 'Kizer.' The origin of the word is from the Greek, 'Caesar,' in German, 'Kaiser,' pronounced (Kizer) and in Holland spelt 'Keizer.''

MLM: Peter, son of Michael and Hannah Keizer, and gr. son of George the immigrant, who came from Germany to Lunenburg in 1753. Peter was born Jan. 1, 1795, died May 27, 1879 in Chester, where his widow Annie, died Aug. 19, 1880.^10,11
