Biography

Gail Clarke: Fanny Eliza Houghton (1860 - 1920) married Andrew A. Foster (1851 - 1923), on Dec. 23, 1880. He was a student of Grinnell College and a successful businessman
in Grinnell who, for a time, was a partner in the hardware business with Ithiel S. Bailey. He also sold livestock and had a good farm outside of Grinnell. They were
members of the Congregational Church, where Andrew was a trustee for several years. He also was on the Grinnell City Council and was a member of the Elks
Lodge. They belonged to the Congregational Church, and he was a member of the church Board of Trustees. Their home was destroyed in the tornado of 1882. Fannie
and Andrew had no children of their own, but had an adopted daughter named Lily. Fannie provided the information for her father's death certificate. Fannie herself died
of cancer. She and her husband, Andrew Foster, were prominent Grinnell, IA residents.⁴

Was Killed in St. Louis and His Body Will Be Brought to this City This Morning.
The remains of Eugene A. Houghton, who was found dead on the sidewalk in front of Hanlon's saloon, on Chstnut street, in St. Louis. Thursday morning,
will arrive in Kansas Citj this morning in accordance with the request of his widow, who resides at 1711 Forest avenue, this city. Houghton was bill clerk for the Eli Walker Dry Goods Company, by which he had been employed since last May. Thursday morning he was at Hanlon's saloon in company with his desk mate, J. R. Molker. The colored porter, Hallon, had ordeied Houghton out of the place several times. Hanlon, the saloon keeper, claims he saw Houghton and the porter staiidlng on the sidewalk. Mokler came out and pushed the men apart. He shoved Houghton so forcibly that he fell and
struck his head on the walk. Mokler says he knew nothing of Houghton's death until he came out of the saloon and found the body lying on the ground. He testified at the inquest Thursdav that he did not push Houghton. He believes the porter must have knocked him down, as the porter was the only one with whom he had trouble. Hanlon's story is corroborated by two colored musicians and a porter, Robert Townsend. The deceased was 32 years old. He went to St. Louis from Omaha seven months ago. He lived at the Merchants' hotel, Twelfth and Olive streets. His widow was shocked by tho telegram Thursday announcing his death. The funeral will be held afternoon from Stine's undertaking establishment.⁶

Biography

"Frederick W. Houghton, M.D., physician and druggist at Council Bluffs, is a native of Wisconsin, and was born at Sparta, in that state, September 9, 1861, and is a son of Albert R. Houghton. When Dr. Houghton was but two years of age, his parents removed to St. Albans, Vermont, and when eight years old, the family removed to Sacramento, California, and after a residence of one year on the Pacific Coast, returned and located at Council Bluffs. Dr. Houghton was educated in the public schools of this city, graduating the high school in the class of 1879. Deciding to pursue the medical profession, he entered the office of Dr. McCrae, of Council Bluffs, where he continued for a time, but in 1880 he entered the College of Physicians and Surgeions, in New York City, taking a three years' course, graduating in May 1883. He still further qualified himself for the medical profession by a year's course at St. Joseph's Hospital, at Paterson, New Jersey, where he remained one year.
In 1887, Dr. Houghton located at Council Bluffs, and engage in the practice of his profession and also opened a drug store, which he still conducts in connection with his medical practice. He was married in September 1885 to Miss Geneva Van Beebe of this city. They have one son, Albert B.
Dr. Houghton received a thorough medical education; he is energetic and public spirited, and though still a young man, occupies a prominent place among the medical fraternity of Pottawattamie County."¹
