BiographyWilliam Vaughan is the son of David, grandson of Anthony and great grandson of Anthony, a United Empire Loyalist, who together with his two brothers moved to Chester, N. S. David and John left Chester and settled at Quaco, N. B. where they engaged in shipbuilding and became wealthy, where there descendents are today. The Vaughans first came to Mass. whence they departed, settling in Virginia early in the seventeenth century. Rowland was probably progenitor of this family. The Vaughans are of Welsh descent, the name means "Little." Tradition has it that a David Vaughan was at one time King of Wales. Descendants of Rowland removed to Rhode Island , four of the seven brothers who came to Rhode Island, remained there, and the above three as stated, came to Chester. Capt. J. A. Vaughan, brother of William, and master of a United States steamship plying between New York city and the West Indies, narrowly escaped a Spanish warship during the present civil war between Cuba and Spain. Captain Vaughan's ship was fired on by the Spanish warship, but escapted without injury. Anthony, the original settle, had been an officer in New England, and his accutrements still remain in the family. Col. Vaughan, of a collateral branch of the family, and son of the Lieutenant-Governor of New Hampshire, was the hero of Louisburg, 13th May, 1745, being largely instrumental in the capture of that supposed impregnable stronghold by the New Englanders. The Vaughans have always been a modest and unassuming people.5
