MARTIN COUNTY ANCESTORS By Ruby H. Stiles
AARON HOUGHTON
Aaron Houghton, son of William and Celia A. (McKay) Houghton, was born in Mason County, Kentucky, on March 9, 1807 and when twelve years old came with his parents to Daviess County, Indiana , in 1819. In 1834, he purchased a tract of land along White River, through which the New
Albany-Vincennes road crossed the river on a ferry near the islands, up the river from the present Floughton bridge, on Highway 550. In the deed from the government, it specified that Houghton must maintain a ferry as long as it was needed on his land. Floughton made many trips to New Orleans on flatboats and, while there married a New Orleans girl, Catherine Robertson, in 1839. Tney lived near the ferry, while the beautiful old Houghton I lome "Evergreen Hill," was being built. They had three children, Victoria, Jeanette and Phoeba. Before the home was completed, Mrs. Houghton died, in 1843. In 1846, he married Catherine Agnew, a niece of his first wife, and they had six children, Inis, Henry Clay, Robert, Kittie, Doda and Eula. Evergreen Hill was the scene of many social activities in the early years of Mr. Floughton's life. It was here he entertained Henry Clay, the Great Compromiser of
pre-Civil War days. He named hii fir son after him. He was elected to the State Legislature and served three tenns as State Senator. ln the early days, it was a common sight for wagons and other vehicles to be lined up from Evergreen Hill all the way to the river, awaiting their turn to ferry the river. When
the stage coach reached Evergreen Hill, blasts on the stage coach horn signaled the stagecoach stop at Mt. Pleasant, of the number of passengers who would need refreshments when the coach arrived for a change of horses. Floughton became wealthy in operating the ferry and farming his excellent farm. In 1894, a bridge was built across White River, below the islands, making the ferry' unnecessary. In August, 1894, Aaron Houghton was given the honor of being the first person to cross White River on the new bridge. Fie road over the bridge bearing his name on a white horse, carrying his grandson, Houghton Albaugh, in his arms. It must have been a relief to Aaron Houghton, old in years and wisdom, to know that he need no
longer maintain the ferry over the river. He died July 20, 1897. The farm he purchased in 1834 is still owned by a grand-daughter, Mrs. Kathryn Cline, of
Topeka, Kansas. Other descendants live in Washington, Indiana.19,20

ObituaryMar 31, 1899Brattleboro, Windham Co., VT, USA, Dea S. W. Houghton Death of long time resident of Putney and a personal of Henry W. Longfellow
Deacon Simon VV. Houghton, 80, a longtime resilient of Putney and one of the pillars of the Congregational church, died Saturday morning at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Squires in Brattleboro, where his home had been for the past five years, his death was due to old age and exhaustion, and he had been ill since last October. The body was brought to Putney on the noon train Tuesday, and the funeral was held In the Congregational church at 1 o’clock, Rev. C. J. Harris officiating. Golden Rule lodge of Masons attended in a body. The burial was in the Mt. Pleasant cemetery and was under the Masonic ritual.Mr. Houghton was born in Bolton, Mass., Nov. 12, 1812, and was a son of Timothy and Olive (Moore) Houghton. He was a direct descendant of John Houghton who bought the town of Lancaster, Mass., from the Indian chief Tahanto. The deed of this town was one of Mr. Houghton's most valued relics. When a young man Mr. Houghton left his childhood home and went to Cambridge, Mass., where he made many friends, one of whom was Henry W. Longfellow. His sister became the wife of Dexter Pratt, “the village blacksmith.” In after years Mr. Houghton was proud of two relics of “the spreading chestnut tree,” a card receiver and a napkin ring.
Mr. Houghton married Sarah Ann Meade of Bolton April 7, 1837, and they went to Marlboro, this state, where he engaged in the manufacture of carriages until 1840, when he came to Putney. Here he saw ins eight children grow up, leave the old home and go out into the world. In 1887 Mr. and Mrs. Houghton celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, and at that time the family circle was complete. In July, 1894, Mrs. Houghton died, and since then Mr. Houghton has lived with his daughter, Mrs. Squires.
While in Putney Mr. Houghton waa a farmer and lived in the large house at the top of Kimball Hill, now owned by Homer Taft. He had held about all the town offices, and in 1870 he was a member of the constitutional convention. He was justice of the peace for nearly 40 years and was deacon of the Congregational church about 50 years. He was a prominent Mason, the oldest member of Golden Rule lodge and a charter member of Golden Rule chapter. He was the last of his father’s family.
Mr. Houghton lived an honorable life, and he was true to every principle which he adopted. All of his eight children are living. They are: Mrs. Ellen R. Frost, and Edward T. Houghton of Springfield, Mass; Geo. A. Houghton of Salida, Col; Mrs. Sarah L. Harding of Southwick, Mass; Dr. S. W. Houghton of Hazardville, Conn; Mrs. Carrie Squires of Brattleboro; Mrs. Catherine S. Morrison of Paterson, X. J., and Mrs. Mary E. Hubbard of Hatfield, Mass. Besides his own children there are 22 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.     _
