BiographyMILTON OREN HOUGHTON was attended at birth by Dr. Nichols. MILTON is listed in the Houghton Genealogy. The family moved often, and MILTON lived in Western, Oneida, NY in 1900. His mother died in 1902 when MILTON was 10 years old. MILTON attended many schools: St. Johnsville, Montgomery, NY, Lowville Lewis, NY, Lasselsville, Fulton, NY. He finally went to Kendall, Orleans, NY and lived with J.W. Crandall, the brother of his stepmother, Emma Eliza Crandall. He was valedictorian of Kendall's class of 1911. MILTON was in the class of 1915 at the University of Buffalo Medical School. He earned tuition money by icing refrigerator cars in Kendall during the summer and doing lab work for a faculty member in his senior year. His internship was at Buffalo's German Deaconess Hospital. MILTON was especially gifted in the art of diagnosis. MILTON began his medical practice in Perry, NY and was there until his enlistment in the Army Medical Corps in 1917. He trained at Fort Riley, KS and Camp Logan in Houston, TX, and was on staff when the “Spanish Flu” pandemic broke out. He became a first lieutenant on August 1917 and a captain Feb. 1919. MILTON was overseas from June 1918 to May 1919 in the 108th Sanitary Train, 33rd Division, and again experienced the flu pandemic when it attacked the American troops, He was in the Somme offensive, at Verdun, Fromerville (Lorraine), Meuse, Argonne, Troyon (Lorraine). MILTON was discharged at Camp Upton, NY June 1919. MILTON was first married to Eva V. Wells and had a daughter, Jean Anne Houghton, who married Dr. Charles R. ("Bud") Sempere. Jean and Bud had four children: Carol Anne Sempere (Wirth), Douglas Roquet Sempere, Thomas Paul Sempere, and James Milton Sempere. More information about this family is available from James Milton Sempere. After the war, MILTON set up practice in Hamlin, N.Y. The house is now a funeral home. He stayed there until 1942 when he moved to Randolph, Cattaraugus, NY. MILTON and Eva divorced in Brevard County, FL in 1943. Eva and MILTON continued to remain cordial, even after their divorce, and vacationed near to each other in Florida. MILTON married THERESA ZEPHRENA (“RENA”) GRAVELLE CLEMENTS shortly thereafter in Rochester, NY. MILTON lived in Randolph (39 Jamestown Street), and owned three vacation homes : 1) a hunting cabin in Hotchkiss Hollow, Cattaraugus, NY (1944-1954); 2) a summer cottage at Whitney Bay, Chautauqua, NY (1954-1964); 3) a mobile home at Briny Breezes, Palm Beach, FL (1956-1969). These vacation places allowed him to do some of his favorite activities—hunting and fishing. MILTON lived in Randolph until 1967, when he and RENA built a house at Chautauqua Shores next to Chautauqua Institution, Chautauqua, NY. One of his favorite activities was mowing the lawn on his riding mower. MILTON retained his office in the Randolph house, until he suffered a stroke there in April 1969, that killed him two weeks later. He died April 28, 1969 in W. C. A. Hospital, Jamestown, Chautauqua, NY, and is buried in the Randolph Cemetery. In his will, he named RENA as beneficiary and executrix. Interests: Hunting and fishing, tinkering with machinery, playing cribbage, raising guppies, playing bridge, vacationing each year in Florida. Had computers been around during his lifetime, he probably would have loved them.13
Dr. Milton Oren Houghton MD was listed in JW Houghton's 1912 Houghton Genealogy.

He was one of the two Democratic residents of the Sixth Ward ever elected to the Common Council from that ward.
For many years he was president of the Merchants Club and had served as major of the Forty-eighth Regiment, National Guard, and was a member of the St. Lawrence River Anglers Association.

He is survived by his widow, one son, Claude S. Houghton; two brothers, G.G. Houghton of Parish and William H. Houghton of Ogdensburg and two sisters, Mrs. Ellen A. Miles of Auburn and Mrs. C.R. Skinner of Syracuse. The funeral will be held at the house Monday afternoon.

Men of Progress:
Houghton, Charles Elmer, North Bennington, was born in Rowe, Franklin county, Massachusetts, March 10, 1818, and died May 12 1890. He was the son of Jonathan and Melinda (McLeod) Houghton, his ancestry being English on his father's side and Scotch on his mother's. His early educational training was received in the common schools. He could almost be styled a self-educated man, for he was always particularly interested in scientific subjects, studying them at every opportunity. Mr Houghton was one of the best known men, not only in his own county, but in the state as well. He had the executive ability of a successful business man, was a keen reader of men, and held the leadership among his fellows because of certain characteristics which he possessed to an eminent degree. He had his own way to make in life, yet he found time to devote to public enterprises and, like the typical Vermonter, early acquired traits of perseverance that won for him place and honor in the commonwealth, as well as a competence. He entered mercantile life in Shaftsbury, in 1841, with his brother, the late J. C. Houghton. In 1855, leaving the fine business that the two had jointly built up to the junior brother, he removed to North Bennington, where he engaged in commerical enterprise with his younger brother, R. L. Houghton. Subsequently he took the whole concern and carrie it on until 1863, when he associated with it his son, Edmund C., to whom he sold out in 1865 to give his attention to his duties as Vice-president and Manager of the First National Bank of North Bennington, which had recently been organized; the office of Vice-President he held until his death. He had held official connection with four Bennington banks, and was the trusted assoicate of a company of solid business men. At the time of his death he was the Treasurer of the Bennington and Rutland Railroad Company and for many years was on the Board of Directors. He had also been actively connected with several large paper mills in the section. Early in life Mr. Houghton served on the regimental commander's staff. He had represented the town of Shaftsbury in the Legislature, and had slso held the offices of Assistant Judge, Constable, Selectman, Lister and Postmaster while a resident of that place. For two terms he was a member of the State Senate, and took a leading position there. He was a Presidential Elector in 1876, was for six years a Director of the State Prison, had been County Treasureer, and member of the Republican State and County Committees. He was active in Masonry, belonging to the Lodge and the Commandery. He was also a member of the committee of the Gennington Historical Society who prepared the bill in 1876 which afterward became the charter of the Bennington Battle Monument Association. On November 1, 1838, he married Mary E. Hutchins, who survives him, with to children: Edmund C. and Helen C. Houghton 9now Mrs. Hiram Cole.)3,10,5,26
