WDH: On October 10, 1862, Chester Houghton, age 26, was officially mustered into Company C, 27th Regiment Michi-gan Infantry as a 2nd Lieutenant, in Port Huron, Michigan. He was promoted to a 1st Lt. on December 22, 1862....
Capt. William B. Wright, 1st Lt. Frederick Myers, and 2nd Lt. Chester W. Houghton were the officers in charge of the 152 listed men in the 27 Michigan Infantry, Company C. On April 12, 1863, the regiment proceeded from its rendezvous at Ypsilanti, to Kentucky via Cincinnati, Ohio. The Regiment was stationed at various places in Kentucky, and had one of its first skirmishes with the Confederates at Jamestown on June 2, 1863. They were then assigned to the 3rd. Brigade of the 9th Corp, and then sent to Mississippi to reinforce General Grant‘s Siege of Vicksburg until July 4, 1863...Company Muster Rolls state that for January and February 1864, Chester Houghton was for a time: ?Detailed Acting Aid De Camp Jan. 22, 1864, on the Staff of Colonel E.W. Peirce, Comdg. 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, 9th Army Corps.? On April 20, 1864, Chester Houghton was promoted to a Captain. By the spring of 1864, the 27th Regiment was rested and at full strength of 864 men when it crossed the Rapidan River and took part in the one of the deadliest battle during the Civil War—the Battle of the Wilderness...The Battle of Spotsylvania would be the last battle that Captain Chester Houghton would fight in, as he would become a casualty and nearly lose his life...Captain Chester Houghton, of the 27th Michigan, would be temporarily appointed a Brevet Major when the commander of his unit, Major Samuel Moody, was wounded during the Battle of the Wilderness...have his left arm amputated by surgeons at the same field hospital to save his own life...The military records state that on May 12, 1864, while fighting with his men at the Battle of Spotsylvania, Chester Houghton was severely wounded when a musket ball hit is left arm and shattered it...The surgeon at the field hospital gave Chester the Confederate bullet that they removed from his arm, and he re-tained possession of it and would latter give it to his father, William Houghton, after the war. The descendants of his family still have the Confederate minié ball that cost Chester his left arm and nearly his life...Four days later, on May 16th, 1864, field surgeons in Burnside‘s 9th Corps field hospital amputated Chester‘s left arm at the shoulder joint...Chester, still gravely injured, was then taken to Frede-ricksburg, Virginia, then to nearby Belle Plain. From this port, he was transported and admitted to Armory Square General Hospital in Washington, DC, on May 26th, 1864...Chester Houghton's health did not improve enough that he would be fit for combat duty again, so he was dis-charged for disability on October 3, 1864. Subsequently, he returned to Washington, DC, where he was promoted to Captain and Com. of Subs. US Vol's? on February 15, 1865. The Commissary was in charge of all food or sub-stance supplies at a military post. Such essential food items as pork, salt, candles, coffee, and hard-tack would all be shipped to the troops through the Commissary.
The 27th Michigan's last Company Muster Roll for Chester Houghton is dated July 26, 1865. It states that Chester, age 30, appeared at the Delany House, Washington, DC, and was mustered out on that date, although the official mustered out and honorably discharged date is October 9, 1865. The document further states that he was discharged from S.O. No. 330 by the War Department.2,11,12,13,14

BiographyWDH: Buell attended Whitewater Teacher's College, in Whitewater, Wisconsin, that would later become the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. For several years, he served as Superintendent or Bible teacher of the Sunday school at the LaGrange United Methodist Church.
Like all the Houghtons at that time, Buell learned to play at least one instrument and he choose the trumpet. As a lasting memorial to Buell and other Houghtons from La-Grange, the family donated a baby grand piano in the La Grange United Methodist Church, which is still in use at the beginning of the 21st Century.
By all contemporary accounts, he was a true Christian and was respected and loved by all who had dealings with him. He never married, worked hard on the family farm, and passed away at home in October 1933. Before he died, he made his younger sister Cecile promise on his deathbed that she would never sell the Houghton Farm in La-Grange—their home. He is buried in the Houghton family plot at the Round Prairie Cemetery in LaGrange, Wiscon-sin.
Cecile was adamant to keep his dying wish, and never did sell any of the 180-acre farm. After her death, her hus-band, who had inherited everything because she had no will, immediately sold the farm that Cecile had loved so much. This author and his brother, Bruce R. Houghton, Jr., were put in the uncomfortable legal position of buying back the Houghton Homestead from Cecile‘s husband—the same house and land that their family had lived continuous-ly in for over 125 years!4

Biography2009Memoirs of Orley Clifton Houghton by his grandson William D. Houghton; see also his Houghton Ancestors

Orley and Faith moved to 1237 McArthur Avenue, in Racine Wisconsin, and then to Chicago, Illinois, as Faith was a teacher and Orley found work as a draftsman and en-gineer.
As mentioned in the previous chapter, Orley Houghton drafted a 40-page, hand-written autobiography to his son Bruce Robertson Houghton, Sr., in the late 1940s...
Orley would work as a draftsman, engineer, and inven-tor on many different types of mechanized farm equipment, including a cotton picker and a tractor he invented with tank-like treads that he called a ?Creeping Crawler? or ?Creeping Tractor.? This piece of equipment would be the predecessor of the Caterpillar tractor.
Orley‘s younger brother Buell B. Houghton (1870-1933) would take over the family farm from their father, Horace Houghton, who died in 1913. Horace would buy back the house and 40 acres that Orley had owned from a railroad company that held the mortgage, and give the house back to his brother, Orley. Orley was eternally grateful to his brother, and always mentioned him fondly. Orley‘s father in law, William Robertson of Scotland, rebuilt the house from the ground up and lived for many years with the Orley and his family.15,2

Author1961wrote a wonderful children‘s book, The Blacksmith's Daughter, "that is a fictional account of her mother and father‘s travel and early years on the Houghton Farm in Wisconsin. The short book is historical fiction and Cecile writes in her forward: ?It there is a bit of imagination here and there, we trust it serves only to emphasize certain characteristics which we recall in some very dear people.? The main character of the story is a young girl named Libby, who was, in reality, her mother, Elizabeth Wishart. Cecile writes of her family‘s stagecoach ride from Clinton to Buffalo, New York, a four-day boat trip on the Erie Canal, and the trip on the Great Lakes to Milwaukee. Then they loaded their few possessions into a wagon and headed west to their new home in LaGrange, Wisconsin. The main charter in the book, Libby, describes her first encounters with Black Hawk Indians, the dangers of wild wolves, a July 4th celebration held at Bark River, and finding a diamond. I highly recommend this charming book that details early pioneer life."7

BiographyWDH: She graduated from Whitewater High School and then the School of Speech, at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois. She taught at country schools and also at an acad-emy.
She became an accomplished writer and member of the Wisconsin Writers Association and authored several hun-dred articles for secular and religious magazines, plays, poems, and stories. She contributed to anthologies, like Wisconsin Harvest, by August Derleth. Her historical, children's books and books of poems, included: The Blacksmith's Daughter, The Velvet Box, Sun Across Wis-consin, Ol Man Riber, Patter of Rain, Remember When?, and others. She loved to write and often typed her manu-scripts on an old mechanical typewriter.
One of her best known and favorite books was The Blacksmith?s Daughter that she published in 1961. The main character of the story is a young girl named Libby, who was in reality her mother, Elizabeth Wishart. Cecile was a wonderful poet and writer, but her books received little acclaim while she was alive.4
