BiographyLiterary folk figure. Dexter Pratt moved to 54 Brattle Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1827 to work as a blacksmith. His neighbor Henry Wadsworth Longfellow often walked by this home on his way to work at Harvard. In 1839, Longfellow was inspired to write his now well-known poem "The Village Blacksmith," apparently inspired by Pratt and the "spreading chestnut tree" under which his shop stood, although the poem does not stay true to biographical details. Today, Pratt's house is denoted by a historical sign, and a large stone tablet marks where the famous chestnut tree of the poem once stood.
