Professor Charles Edward Houghton, a member of the faculty of the New York University College of Engineering for twenty-two years before he retired in 1924 as Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering, died yesterday morning after a brief illness at his home in Ionia, Mich. He was 81 years old.
Professor Houghton, a specialist in thermo-dynamics, was born at Fryeburg, Me., on March 14, 1859. He received a bachelor of Arts degree from Stanford University in 1893 and the next year received a degree as mechanical engineer from Cornell University. After teaching at Cornell and the University of Arkansas, he joined the New York University faculy in 1902. Professor Houghton wrote extensively on engineering subjects. He was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Society of University Professors and Sigma Psi fraternity. He leaves a widow, Mrs. Anna Boeschen Houghton; a son, Edwin J. Houghton of Ionia, and a daughter Mrs. John Dwight Sullivan of New York City. Burial will be in Ionia.

THE DALLES, Oct. 26 (Special) – Funeral services for Fred L. Houghton, 80, resident of this city for 60 years who died Monday, were held Wednesday. Born in Philadelphia January 7, 1864, he came here at the age of 20 and became associated in the drug business with the George C. Blakeley.

He married Evelyn Lord, January 15, 1890. Mrs. Houghton survives.

Mr. Houghton was president and one of the largest stockholders of the Wasco Warehouse Milling company recently sold to the Loose-Wiles Biscuit company. He was a member of the Elks lodge and of the Kiwanis club and of the Dalles Country Ccub. The present country clubhouse was built largely through the generosity of Mr. Houghton.

Burial was in the Odd Fellows Cemetery here.

Mr. Houghton was very well known in the White Salmon Valley, as he and Mrs. Houghton had a summer home there for years and spent all the summer months in that district.

BiographyJWH: 'After school days he chose the sea as a profession and was master of an East Indiaman at the age of twenty-two; commanded many different sailing ships and steamers; visiting all the principal ports in the world. In 1903 he gave up the sea and took charge of dredges employed in opening the new Ambrose Channel -- the great new fair-way for ocean liners entering the port of New York. In 1905 affiliated with the Townsend & Downey Shipbuilding Company, entering into the shipbuilding business. In 1906 he superintended the construction of the 'Roosevelt'-- the ship which carried Commander Peary on his last successful trip in search of the North Pole.
