Biography

'Robert (7) Hand, son of Nathan and Margaret Hand, was born in Wantage, Sussex County, New Jersey 26 Nov. 1806. He crossed the Delaware River into Pike County, Pa. and married Susannah Goble in 1827 at Milford. In 1831 they moved to Hawley, Wayne Co., Pa., then a wilderness but with a few houses, being one of the pioneers in that area. He found the hills covered with valuable timber and purchased approximately 180 acres of land from David Bishop, two miles from the present site of the town, near Middle Creek. He cleared 50 acres and erected a large dwelling and a barn. Then he turned his attention to lumbering and found the lackawaxen and Delaware Rivers easy highways to the cities and eastern seaboard. He died 19 May 1854 at his home, the result of a fever contracted while away from home. He left his widow and seven children.³'
