Formerly known as the Houghton-Wheeler House, current research has led to a name change to the J.P. Houghton, Jr. House. More research needs to be done on the early history of the property, however. According to historian Esther Whitcomb, it was built in about 1795, and its first owner was Jonathan Priest Houghton, Jr (1767-1838). His parents were from Harvard, but he was apparently born in Bolton. In 1796 he married Bulah Whetcomb (Whitcomb), daughter of Ephraim and Sarah Whetcomb of Bolton. The building of the house was probably associated with their marriage; if so, it is not likely to have been completed until 1796 or 1797.
Town records imply that the Houghtons were still here in 1833, when the town laid out the southwest end of Sugar Road from the Great Road "onto the road near where Jonathan Priest Houghton lives." The map of 1831, however, shows that by then the owner of the house was Elias Warner, Jr. (b. 1795). In 1825 Elias, who was related to both the Priests and the Houghtons through his mother, had married Mary Ann Lawrence, daughter of Abijah Lawrence, then of Harvard Road. Like the Houghtons and many other families in the north part of Bolton, the Warners were as closely affiliated with the town of Harvard as they were with Bolton.⁵
